I have had it in a closet for the past year because it is just a sweet piece of test equipment and I did not want to part with it. But, I have come to my senses and would like to see it go to someone who will enjoy it as much as I did. I simply no longer have a use for it. This is a laboratory grade tube tester. The sort of tester you need if you really want to tell if a tube is working to specifications vs if its just good or bad. The 981 is a true Mutual Transconductance tube tester and measures actual mutual transconductance(GM) This tester is in very good overall condition. I purchased it as a tester that had been gone through and calibrated by a professional. I tested about two dozen tubes over two years and it works perfectly. All controls are positive and move freely. Other than a few scratches it looks and works as new. Included it a copy of the original instruction manual. If you would like a truly professional tube tester for you lab or shack you will love this one.

I believe that its retail price then was somewhere around $1500, which was about the price of a new car, so not many were made and few would have ended up anywhere other than a lab. NICE WORKING WESTON TUBE TESTER
This is model 777. This tester works. Will test tubes just fine but the line adjust will only move about half way to the center. When you turn the line adjust knob the hum gets louder. It is working the needle just does not move to the center. The case is in fairly good condition. It is missing the handle. If you need a good tester without paying a lot of money this is it.

Order No. CA-50-2413 dated June 23, 1950 This is a high quality mutual conductance tube tester built to high government standards. It is of the two-transformer design whereby one transformer supplies operating voltages for the tube tester. The second transformer supplies filament(heater) current for the tube being tested. Relieving the first transformer of heavy current drain, providing more stable and reliable operation. Capable of testing 4, 5, 6, 7(large) octal, loctal, acorn, seven and nine pin miniature tubes, also various sub-miniature types. Includes grid/plate clip lead and manual. Very detailed manual includes operating instructions. Theory of operation, calibration and maintenance procedure, parts ... morelist and additional tube data. Aluminum case and front panel is in excellent condition. All original knobs present. Roll chart operates smoothly from end to end, no binding, rips or tape. Case, lid and hardware in excellent condition, no dents or rust. Olive drab paint shows only normal ware, considering age of unit. Contains only one tube(3A4) no mercury vapor rectifier. This item is a Weston 774-4 Tube Tester and Set Analyzer. The panel is in very good condition. It can be used as a stand alone tube tester or a radio/audio set analyzer. It uses a type 71A tube inside. When used as a set analyzer. The adapter socket for a particular tube(say a 24A would use the 5 pin adapter) is plugged into the socket in the upper right, the tube plugged into that adapter, and a cable coming from the tube tester is plugged into a socket adapter to plug into the radio chassis. Then, voltage and current measurements may be made under operation. Here is some more information about what was tested and included in the sale. TESTING: The line adjust works. The meter works, and tested a 24A and a 12A6 tubes. They tested good, and no shorts were noted. I don't know if the calibration is good or if any components drifted, so ... morethis sale is listed as for parts. But the tester seems to work and may need a bit of refurbishing. The operation is not obvious. And I strongly recommend reading the included Instruction Manual. It will need batteries inside to use the voltmeter function. Weston Model 777& Model 772 Tube Tester + Analyzer(Multimeter) General Description: Date stamp inside is nearly illegible. But I believe it reads"Jul 25 1945" Solid wood case; very weathered on the exterior. And handle replaced with rope. It did it's job of protecting the contents. The ends of the wire leads for the tube tester both have cracks and chips out of the plastic. No problem, just use a little bit of care when using them. Power plug was damaged. It is replaced. And the fuses were moved inside the cabinet. Internals all in very good shape. No crumbling wires. Corrosion, or loose solder joints. Analyzer/ Meter tried out with both an AC and DC power source and works. Ohm meter works with the low ranges. The R x 10.000 range for the ohm meter won't work until it gets 2- 7.5 volt batteries or the equivalent. I like to offer complete units so this one is sold for parts or restoration. This tester DOES FUNCTION for the tube testing section. It's a great piece of history! Can use a little time in cleaning the faceplate. All switches and line set pot has been cleaned. It's neat to see this old machine fire up! Offered is the reference standard of all commercially made tube testers. This is the WESTON model 686- 10A vacuum tube analyzer along with its original Instruction Manual and Tube Data Chart Manual. Its not just a tube tester but rather a collection of individual power supplies and AC signal sources into one unit. Included is a high voltage supply in three ranges 60/150 and 300vdc. Heater voltage from.5 to 120v. Grid voltages from 0-100v. Included are meters for GM. Grid current and plate current to 120ma. All of the functions are variable, which allow the user to test tubes under real world circumstance, or within a pre-determined set of values. Circuits are patched up for EACH tube type you wish to test. Banana plugs included) I have owned this tester for 5-7 years or so. I have had it re-capped. All meters were checked good. Transformers ... morewere good. Subsequently used it only sparingly and that was a few years ago, and did not test a wide variety of tube at that time, so I can not vouch for all of its operation. I hate to see it go, but a recent move has left me with less space so my loss is your gain. The 10A was the last and best version of this tester. The manuals I have are all dated 1955 so it would be a good guess that this particular unit was made somewhere around that time. The manuals are a must and themselves are very difficult to find. I believe that its retail price then was somewhere around $1500, which was about the price of a new car, so not many were made and few would have ended up anywhere other than a lab. Up for auction is a clean used Weston 981 Type 3 Tube tester. I purchased this tube tester 3+ years ago to test VR(voltage regulator) tubes and to more accurately test other vacuum tubes. At the time I only had a small Sencore tester. Two years ago I sold off all my Hallicrafters equipment. And last year I sold off all my Collins and Drake tube equipment. Therefore. This fine tube tester is now surplus to my needs. I have had it in a closet for the past year because it is just a sweet piece of test equipment and I did not want to part with it. This is a nice. Clean meter. The movement operates smoothly w/o sticking. I do not know the original specifications, I can only report that it has been tested and the following was found. The resistance is 1,200 ohms. The sensitivity is 90 micro amperes for full scale deflection. So, if you need a replacement meter for your tester then consult the manual for the meter specifications. Up for bid is an antique Weston Electrical Instrument Corp. tube tester/analyzer. Model 547 No. 24949. I found this tester at an estate sale and it had previously been owned by a collector. I believe the tester is from the late 1920's. I cannot check exactly how the tester is supposed to work. Because it did not come with any sort of manual. However, I have checked each of the gauges individually, and each of them works properly. All of the internal electrical parts look to be original to me. Though one of the push buttons seems to have been replaced at some point. The tube tester requires a 3 volt battery, and I don't know if the battery holder is original, but it looks to be. The switches and knobs all move freely and the cord looks to be in good shape considering how old it is. Overall. It is in great condition for it's age. ... moreThe tester comes in a black bakelite case. The case is slightly chipped and scratched(see the pictures) The case has a leather handle. Which is very sturdy, though it seems to have been repaired at some point. The clasps on the case are all solid and close tightly. The case is missing one of it's legs though. The tester is 12.5" by 9.25" by 4" I've described the item to the best of my ability and have taken a lot of pictures of it. The pictures are an important part of the description. And everything is as it appears in the pictures. The item is being sold as is( for parts or repair) because of it's age and no returns will be accepted.

The only issues that we see are 1) one hinge has become unwelded and 2) the Bakelite on the gird and plate cap is falling apart– the caps are still usable. Up for sale is a Weston 686 10a tester. This is the Holy Grail of tube testers. A lot of people prefer this tester over the Hickok 539c. Overall its in Excellent condition. As you see in the pictures the paint is very good and the inside looks like it just came out of the factory. Electrically this unit workst but it will need a calibration to work properly. Remenber this unit is 50+ years old. I bought this from a retired electrical engineer who had it in storage for the last 30yrs. Up for sale is a complete Weston 664. 665 combination vacuum tube set tester. The set was built between 1931 and 1934 and contains a Weston model 664 capacity meter and 665 selective analyzer and several free point sockets and adapters to test radio circuits. This set comes with many extras from probes to extra socket adapters. This particular set was used on a navy battle ship during WW2 and still works. NAVY OQ-3/Weston Model 788 Gm Tube Tester (MINT)
Honestly. I do not think(in your lifetime) you will ever find a more Beautiful, Iconic, Rare and WORKING piece of equipment! Look at the pictures and look at the thumb wheel for the roll chart, there is ZERO wear; the whole tester looks like it was never used, or maybe once or twice. This testers condition deserved some electrical restoration to get it back to working condition, so I did that for. There was no calibration procedure in the manual(original and included) so I simply used my Lab quality 6L6 calibration tube to verify this testers function; ALL was"right on" as expected. This Rare tester will test all older tubes, like popular 2A3 and W.E. 300A/B audio tubes. It has a modern 7 pin tube socket but not a 9 pin. FYI, with this testers patch cord scheme, you only need to have a tubes base connections to test almost ANY tube. ... moreAs you can see from the pictures, the production tag shows a date of Dec. 11, 1944. ALL of the patch cords and power cord, are in great soft condition. Some spares are included. I thought, at first, the main Gm meter needle was sticking at low end of scale, but when actually testing a tube the needle moves up and back down to zero, just like it should. The fine item you are considering is an Antique Vintage Sylvania Vacuum Tube Tester Weston Model 678. I have lots of photos below. So be sure to scroll down to the bottom of this page to take a better look. This neat vintage tube tester has a great plaque on the front which reads“Sylvania Tester“ and there‘s also a sheet of old paper tacked on the back which would seem to indicate that it‘s a Weston Model 678. The tester, which measures approximately 17” by 15 ½” looks to me to date to the 1920’s or 1930’s, with a large center meter and an all wood case. The tester is in pretty remarkable, very well cared for, overall condition, but it does have a few issues, these being that one corner of the plastic front tube panel is chipped off(see photos) and the power plug is very old and a bit smashed. And they have very close Tested Mutual Conductance numbers. This was done on a number of Tubes including 12AX7. 12AU7, 12AT7, 6DJ8/6922/7308, 6550, KT88, EL34, GZ34/5AR4 and more. All were very close I will Include a Copy of the Operating Manual along with a List of newer Tubes not listed on[ the excellent working Roll Chart] The Metal Case is in good condition with a few paint scratches and bumps. Really almost very good as I try to be conservative. I will guarentee th the Tester will not be DOA. I can't do the same as to the Results compared to your Tester.
