It applies individual voltages to all elements and sends a varying ac signal to the grid of the tube under test. Its actual amplification factor is measured as a Gm value on the meter. Up for auction is this great Hickok 600A Dynamic Mutual Conductance tube tester. It is overall in great condition with only light scratching on the top cover as shown. The front face with the controls is in great condition. All of the knobs are in place and the roll chart works good too. As for the working condition. I am not sure but it plugged it in and could get a reading with the line adjustment although the meter movement sticks some. I did not attempt to test any tubes but I'm sure with some TLC this could be made into a great tester for you. It's still decent except the back of the case has some of the covering completely worn off(see photo) The tube tester turns on but I haven't tested it beyond seeing if it powers up. ITEM DESCRIPTION A vintage 600A tube tester by Hickok. It works well. May need calibration though. I tested the function with a couple different tubes such as 27, 80, 6V6, 6SN7 and all performed as expected. The power cord is flexible and has no cracks. The small grid cap adapter aged and a bit cracked at the base of it. There is an nice built-in scroll for tube settings included and it even still shows those two digit tubes. The handle. Hinges and clasps are tight and in good condition. Exterior cabinet not water damaged or cracked however, it does have marks paint splatters, and tears consistent with its age. Up for auction is a Hickok 600A Micromho Mutual Conductance(Gm) Tube Tester. This tester is in working condition. But but is being sold“as is” since it has not been recently calibrated. The meter is in excellent condition; the knobs are tight and the chart roll bar works all the way to both ends. As can be seen from the panel face. There is little wear around the knobs which happens from frequent use. This unit operates using both a 83 tube rectifier and a 5Y3WGT tube rectifier. When these tubes were replaced. The tester’s readings did not change– indicating that the original tubes are still good(and will be included in this sale as extras) The tester still has all four rubber feet, original handle, and the original power cord(which has the usual cracking seen in cords from its era) The unit comes with a cap connector, spare fuse, and a copy ... moreof the original manual. Vintage Hickok Model 600A Tube Tester w Instructions Manual w Roll Chart
This is a great estate find from upstate NY. It is a Hickok model 600A tube tester. It has the instruction manual and a roll chart. I don't have any tubes to test nor do I know anything about tube testers. I cannot verify the working condition of this tester because of my lack of knowledge. I do know that the light(as seen in the photo) does turn on although it does flicker very faintly. The chord is a little stiff and there are a couple rips in the rubber towards the plug. It measures 17" wide. 11" deep and 8" tall and is in a hard case that snaps closed. There is some wear to the red case, such as spots where the bare wood is showing through and one of the metal feet has pushed through the wood case. Up for sale here is this vintage Hickok 600A tube tester. I picked up this tester from an estate many years ago. And it has been sitting on a box in my basement since then. I plugged it in and two light bulbs on the front lit up very faintly, but I tried to test a tube and got nothing. The bulbs stopped lighting up after that. I would assume that this needs recalibration at minimum, and possibly more than that. The big sprague grey thing on the back(resistor? appears to be cracked. I bought this a couple of years ago with a large lot of electronics and meant to have it brought back to operating condition and never got around to it. I bought a 6000A before that happened and its time to pass this one along. As you can see in the pictures there is no case.What you see in the pictures is what you get.The unit is in fairly good cosmetic condition.I vacuumed as much dust of of it as I could.My air compressor is not working and I didn't want to disturb any of the electronic connections so I didn't get all of it. A few things I noticed: First off.This tester does power up! At least two modern capacitors have been installed. Hickok Model 600A Micromho Dynamic Mutual Conductance Vacuum Tube Tester
If you are looking for a tester with a nice case. This is not the one. The case is in terrible condition. It is intact enough to safely house the tester, it just doesn't look nice. I don't know if all functions are working. I am capable of; finding a tube number in the scroll. Plug the tube in, make the listed settings, push the listed button, and read the meter, good or replace. Other then setting the line adjust, this is all that I have the knowledge to do. I do not know how accurate it is, as I don't have a tube of a known condition or another tester to compare to. The face of the tester in in pretty good condition. It has definitely had some use. As you can see wear marks around the switches wear fingers have rubbed on it. There is a lens missing over the bias fuse, and the power cord is pretty cracked up and should be replaced ... moreas well as the short test lead. The metal name plate that is supposed to be glued under the lid has come off. The tube sockets seemed to work fine on the two I tried, but all look like they have light corrosion on the contacts. The scroll is complete and works well, it gets a little harder to roll as you approach the ends. There is some writing in pencil on the back of the face. I will wrap up the two tubes underneath to be sure they are not damaged during shipping. BE SURE TO OPEN AND REMOVE THE PACKAGING MATERIAL BEFORE USE! I was forced to part out this unit in order to get the English potentiometer, which I needed for another Hickok. This original face plate is in"good" overall condition. With all the paint and lettering in tact. It does have some discoloration here and there(lighter white in some areas and more yellowish aging in other areas) but it may be possible to get it all cleaned up and looking good. I just don't know how, so I'll leave that up to you. Or use it as it is; it's not that bad overall in my opinion, unless you want near mint, which it is not. For sale is a vintage HICKOK 800K/ 600A tube tester. Basically this 800A model is the same as 600A circuitry except it has better knobs. and gold ionized face plate. Below are few negative side of the item: The tube roll chart damaged. I replaced with tube chart in operation manual which included. Mercury evaporate Rectifier tube 83 has been replace with 5z3 tube. This will need re-calibrate to get correct Mutual Conductance reading(meter indicated lower than normal) Other than above issues. This is a very user friendly Tube Tester if you are in the market for one. This is a very nice Hickok model 600A. I have tested over 8 different tubes on the tester and it seems to work very well. The roll chart is tight and turns freely. The tube cap squeeze clamps are included which look original. two different sizes) The power cord is very good. Based on the overall condition of the casing and the face itself. I would say that this tester has seen very little use. The serial number plate is attached to the case. The handle, latches, and hinges are secure and work as they should. Latches have some surface rust on them. The case reflects less than normal wear for its age. Also included is an Operating Manual and a Supplimental Tube Chart. The line adjust and meter work well also. All of the knobs are tight and function as they should. Many items on ebay have stories to tell. Some are happy. Some are sad. This is one such item. If you're not interested in my making a short story long. Skip ahead to the executive summary. Back in the days when vacuum tubes reigned supreme. Knight, a division of Allied Radio, was the maker of many wonderful test instruments. The KG-600 series of tube testers was a proud member of this family. This fine Knight Tube Tester was born a Model KG-600. But soon after the release of the KG-600, many new tubes hit the scene, most notably the Novar and Compactron types. Knight engineers quickly and very ingeniously designed an upgraded tester, the KG-600A, that was just like the 600 but would also test the new tubes. The ingenious part of the design was that the 600A and subsequent 600-series testers didn't add any more lever switches. The ... moreKnight engineers figured out how to make the same old 10 lever switches perform tests for the additional 2 pins in the Compactron tube base(12 total) Most, if not all, tester manufacturers went with a 13 lever design. 13 lever switches would allow for 12 pins plus a grid cap. Some prior owner of this fine instrument realized how easy it was to upgrade the KG-600 to a KG-600A. Because the same KG-600 circuit with its 10 lever switches was able to test the new tubes. All you had to do is add the new tube sockets and wire them properly. And wire them properly they did. With the exception of drilling the Compactron socket chassis hole a bit too large, they did an excellent job of it. They even installed a KG-600B roll chart in the instrument. This new roll chart had an enhanced grid test procedure that also included a gas test. It was an excellent idea. Here's the sad part. For some reason, the meter lens was removed when the new tube socket hole was drilled. When I bought this tester, the meter movement was packed with tiny iron filings- like what you would get when drilling a hole in the steel chassis. The needle was stuck! Very similar to Hickok 600. 600A, 533, 533A, and uses almost identical data settings(e.g. 6L6: JR 53472, bias 17, RG" i.e. english or shunt, 88) Reads dynamic mutual conductance(gm) directly in micromhos. Works well; checked with: 5U4, 6AQ5, 6BQ5, 6L6, 6SN7, and 12AX7. Hickok 800K / 600A Vacuum Tube Tester
Hickok 800K 600A Vacuum Tube Tester Tester seem to work pretty good. The 6V6GT being tested measured 4180 on my Amplitrex and so looks pretty close. I did put a new cord on it. Cleaned the switches with DeOxit. The tubes(83& 5Y3GT) inside it test as new. Interior electronics look good. Roll chart goes from end to end but gets a little tight at the very ends. Easy fix. Some minor stains on the face and a small dent in the lower right hand corner(see picture) I do not have the manual(a 600A manual will work just fine) but available free on line or nice reprints on Ebay. The case is a little rough but solid. There is a plate/grid wire but the wire covering is cracked and should be replaced. As with any tester purchased on Ebay. It should be gone through and calibrated. Carefully packed for safe arrival using anti-static bio-degradable packing ... morepeanuts. DESCRIPTION* Here's a decent Hickok 600A tube tester I have used for several years testing only some simple guitar-amp tubes: 6L6. 12AX7, 12AU7's. etc. I'm only selling it because I recently bought a calibrated 539C tester. It would continue to serve it purpose well as a"service tester" determining if tubes are shorted, and a general good vs bad idea if a tube is usable or not. I would not rely on it for matching tubes or for selling tubes based on a specific Gm output. I would question it's accuracy. It could probably be calibrated though to achieve more accurate results(it's never been calibrated to my knowledge) In fact. Just to see how it compared. I tested 2 of the same tubes both on this tester and my recently calibrated Hickok 539C. The tubes I checked were a 12AU7 and a 6L6. Here's how they compared: ... more6L6- on this 600A = 4.300 Gm 6L6- on 539C = 5.750 Gm(where 539C says Min. for 6L6 is 3.300) 12AU7- on this 600A = 1.900/ 2,000 12AU7- on 539C = 2.600/ 2,700(where 539C says Min. for 12AU7 is 1.950/1,950) So based on these readings it looks like you have a conservative margin for error to your advantage on this 600A(assuming the 539C is accurate) Both of these tubes read well into the Green"Good" range on the 600A at that. Also. A new power cord has been installed recently. It has a grounded-plug but the ground wire for some reason is not attached. So, I imagine it could still be attached and grounded if so desired. The tube-data chart does not roll properly when installed in the tester- it binds. If you remove it from the tester you can get it to reach both ends of it's chart though with no problem. For the time I used it, I just kept it out of the tester for that reason. This tester will ship completely assembled though as seen in the first 3 photos. The rest of the tester is in very clean condition and Power light comes on. Case shows some wear and tear as seen in photos but still has the nice Philco graphic on the front which is very rare. Hickok 600A w/ manual Transconductance Tube Tester as seen in pictures. Both(internal) tubes test as new on my calibrated Hickok 539C Calibration has been checked. And This is an electrically excellent performer. I replaced the shorts cap, and the meter cap(both are included with your purchase) As you can see. The tube under test is a 6000 gm bogey tube, and it is spot on on this tester Roll chart is very good. Some scuffing on meter plastic. And face. During initial testing I did have the meter stick a little bit. I ran a dryer sheet over the meter face and couldn't get it to stick again after that. So it Seems static related, but i wanted the buyer to be aware of that. it's-10 outside right now and dry as a bone so it wouldn't surprise me) Casing is in fair overall shape.
