800x600 This is a model 539C transconductance tube tester made by Hickok. It is in very good to excellent condition. I tested some tubes on this and it appears to work fine. Notice the EL34. 6L6G, and 12AX7, tube under a test. Includes grid/ plate clip lead, and original manual with tube setting data. Serial number is 29200870. The case is in good condition with a few scuffmarks. Front panel looks very good and has only a few scratches. I cannot guarantee this unit is calibrated, and will probably need some calibration, due to age. All meters and switches work. It comes with the instruction manual, european tube type data book, obsolete tube data book, operating data for the CA-4, the CA-4 adapter, vibrator testor, and grid/plate cap wires. It is in perfect working order. It has just been calibrated according to Daniel Schoo's instruction. He used to purchase government auctions of electronic and other test equipment and was an electronics trainer and engineer himself. This has been in storage and unused for quite a while. I wish I could report that this thing is working 100% but I can't. The power light comes on and the line voltage meter registers. The bias voltage can be adjusted as well as the line voltage but I cannot get it to test a tube. The tubes under test do not light up and they have tested good on the BK tester that I can operate and do have some limited experience with. This is the famous Hickok 539c Tube Tester which I purchased in 2012. Then was sent it directly to C-tech in North Carolina to be calibrated, checked and repaired to be made in perfect working order including all three meters which was done. You can read the label which was placed on it upon finishing the job which indicates exactly what was done to it. Tube chart roller moves perfectly. This offering is for a nice HICKOK 539C TUBE TESTER. The case is solid and presentable. But it does show signs of use. But it has done, and continues to do- it's assigned job of providing protection to the tester. The tester itself is very clean, and seems to work well. This is a fairly complicated tester, I ordered a high-quality, color operator's manual so I could test the unit, this manual will be included with the tester when shipped. The roll chart is dated SPRING 1969, and rolls smoothly. All the meters work smoothly and properly, push buttons work properly, I do not find any problems with this tester. Hiowever, I am not familiar with a tester of this complexity, so I cannot atttest to proper functioning of all the various moptions and tests possible with htis Hickok. So I believe the tester to be working well, but I have always believed a tester of unknown calibration date should be re-calibrated to be really accurate on all tube types. All testers should be calibrated every decade or so, if the user wants extreme accuracy. They test a wide range of tubes, with a total of 14 sockets for different types of tubes. All the hardware woeks great, the latches, hinges, and the heavy duty handle all function properly. somewhat corroded. but all work fine. Up for sale is a Weston 686 10a tester. This is the Holy Grail of tube testers. A lot of people prefer this tester over the Hickok 539c. Overall its in Excellent condition. As you see in the pictures the paint is very good and the inside looks like it just came out of the factory. Electrically this unit workst but it will need a calibration to work properly. However I will state. this is a 50 year old tester and I did not test every function. sold as-is. Has a N.I.S.T. MAIN METER HICKOK 539B or 539C – Tested for Accuracy – Nice!
This meter was removed from a clean operating 539B that I converted to all digital meters. If you have a 539C with the smaller plastic face meter. Then the testers metal face plate will have to be altered to make this fit. I can furnish a paper template if you want to do a conversion. It will be shipped with a shorting wire across the terminals to protect the movement from vibration. The meter is rated at 115 Microampst 172.5 Millivolts and 1500 ohms for full scale deflection. As shown in the pictures I checked it at several points on the meter scale. The voltage across the meter can be checked at the same time. But I have found it’s really not necessary unless the meter has been tampered with. It limits the maximum current to about 125 uA. Which is safe for these meters. If your old meter is not indicating at all check it with the circuit in the picture. If it’s open. Then replace the meter with a 1500 ohm resistor and measure the voltage across the resistor with a digital multimeter. A reading of less than172.5 mV reading while testing a tube would indicate the tester is operating in the normal meter range and anything greater than that would indicate troubles in the tester circuit. NEVER check these meters with an ohmmeter as it can damage the meter movement. This meter is sealed with markings to keep everything honest. DESCRIPTION* Here's a decent Hickok 600A tube tester I have used for several years testing only some simple guitar-amp tubes: 6L6. 12AX7, 12AU7's. etc. I'm only selling it because I recently bought a calibrated 539C tester. It would continue to serve it purpose well as a"service tester" determining if tubes are shorted, and a general good vs bad idea if a tube is usable or not. I would not rely on it for matching tubes or for selling tubes based on a specific Gm output. I would question it's accuracy. It could probably be calibrated though to achieve more accurate results(it's never been calibrated to my knowledge) In fact. Just to see how it compared. I tested 2 of the same tubes both on this tester and my recently calibrated Hickok 539C. The tubes I checked were a 12AU7 and a 6L6. Here's how they compared: ... more6L6- on this 600A = 4.300 Gm 6L6- on 539C = 5.750 Gm(where 539C says Min. for 6L6 is 3.300) 12AU7- on this 600A = 1.900/ 2,000 12AU7- on 539C = 2.600/ 2,700(where 539C says Min. for 12AU7 is 1.950/1,950) So based on these readings it looks like you have a conservative margin for error to your advantage on this 600A(assuming the 539C is accurate) Both of these tubes read well into the Green"Good" range on the 600A at that. Also. A new power cord has been installed recently. It has a grounded-plug but the ground wire for some reason is not attached. So, I imagine it could still be attached and grounded if so desired. The tube-data chart does not roll properly when installed in the tester- it binds. If you remove it from the tester you can get it to reach both ends of it's chart though with no problem. For the time I used it, I just kept it out of the tester for that reason. This tester will ship completely assembled though as seen in the first 3 photos.
