HISTORY The Weston Electrical Instrument Company was founded in New Jersey in 1888. The company was a pioneer in the manufacture of electric measuring instruments and developed the first accurate and portable voltmeters and ammeters. At one point in time. Weston was the world's largest manufacturer of electrical measuring instruments. The company was awarded over 310 patents and was commissioned to illuminate the Brooklyn Bridge. Founder Edward Weston was a competitor of Thomas Edison. Examples of Weston instruments are found in many technology-oriented museums. Including the MIT Museum, The Radio Museum, The Smithsonian, and The National Institute of Standards and Technology. DESCRIPTION This is a vintage Weston Electrical Instrument Corporation D.C. Voltmeter Model No. 45. The device carries various patent dates on the attached metal ... moretag. The latest being July 16, 1901. This is a transportable device that is housed in a beautiful tiger oak case. There is a thick leather carry handle and rubber feet. There is a latch that you undo in order to flip the top back and reveal the voltmeter dial and certification sheet. The meter window is glass. The wooden housing measures about 8” X 8” X 5.5" This is an early piece of the history of the electrification of America. The device really captures a moment in history and is graceful in appearance after all these years. CONDITION This item appears to be in VERY GOOD CONDITION. I don't know how to test it. So I don't know if it works. The glass is intact with no chips or cracks. The wood is in good shape with a couple of corner chips. SHIPPING Fourteen pounds packaged weight. We purchased this antique voltmeter at an estate sale and was told that it was used by the Richmond. Fredericksburg& Potomac Railroad. It has a sticker for the railroad on the outer wooden box and an envelope for the railroad within the box. This is a Weston Model 341 Voltmeter and the paperwork in the box is dated 1954. This instrument is an electrodynamometer voltmeter and if properly used, its indications may be relied upon to within 1/2 of one percent of full scale value. The wooden case has some wear, however, is in nice condition for its age. The Voltmeter appears to be in excellent condition. If you have any questions at all, please do not hesitate to ask. This item is in good condition with some minor cosmetic wear from normal use. There are no significant scratches on the item. The power connectors are in good condition as well. This item was first showing below zero but with a small screwdriver we calibrated it back to zero. We then connected this item to an external power source and started at a low voltage and it showed the correct voltage. We then tested at a high voltage and it showed the correct voltage as well.
