HISTORY The Weston Electrical Instrument Company was founded in New Jersey in 1888. The company was a pioneer in the manufacture of electric measuring instruments and developed the first accurate and portable voltmeters and ammeters. At one point in time. Weston was the world's largest manufacturer of electrical measuring instruments. The company was awarded over 310 patents and was commissioned to illuminate the Brooklyn Bridge. Founder Edward Weston was a competitor of Thomas Edison. Examples of Weston instruments are found in many technology-oriented museums. Including the MIT Museum, The Radio Museum, The Smithsonian, and The National Institute of Standards and Technology. DESCRIPTION This is a vintage Weston Electrical Instrument Corporation D.C. Voltmeter Model No. 45. The device carries various patent dates on the attached metal ... moretag. The latest being July 16, 1901. This is a transportable device that is housed in a beautiful tiger oak case. There is a thick leather carry handle and rubber feet. There is a latch that you undo in order to flip the top back and reveal the voltmeter dial and certification sheet. The meter window is glass. The wooden housing measures about 8” X 8” X 5.5" This is an early piece of the history of the electrification of America. The device really captures a moment in history and is graceful in appearance after all these years. CONDITION This item appears to be in VERY GOOD CONDITION. I don't know how to test it. This is a beautiful antique piece that was designed to test the voltage of various electronic equipment. This piece was made in 1918 by the Weston Electrical Instrument Company in Newark. New Jersey. The piece is built into a beautiful wood case(likely oak, but we're not certain) with brass latches and hinges. The case opens up to reveal a lower panel with the original company paperwork tag that gives details on usage and the range it can measure. The top part of the interior is a textured metal panel with the volt meter in the center. There ... moreis a brass badge on the front of the piece that says"Made by Weston Electrical Instrument Company, Newark NJ, Patented July 16, 1901, Model 45, Serial No 17449. Just below the badge is a"Correction" mechanism which allows you to calibrate the machine. This is a beautiful antique piece that would be great for any collectors of antique electronic equipment! Condition: This piece is antique and used with some wear. The piece has not been tested and we cannot confirm if it works or not. The wood case has some wear from use and age. Including some scratching, light dents and and chips in the wood.I believe there was another cap on the negative side at one time, no longer there. The interior is relatively clean with some light tarnishing from age and some fading and discoloration on the paper label from age. There may have originally been a leather handle on the exterior, but that piece is not included. Overall this is in nice condition for its age, and has a nice antique patina which gives it a classic look. Size is 9" wide, 7.25" deep, and 4- 5/8" tall when closed. Condition: The leather handle is broken. One corner of the lid has been repaired. There is light rust on the hinges. Dings, chips, cracks, or rust, but there may be some minor scuffs or scratches from use. The round volt meter is marked STYLE BS-27763-21 F.S. = 1 M.A. MR34W300DCVV CAL. FOR.09 IN. STEEL PANEL. I have no way of testing these meters but they appear to be in good condition, with no corrosion or rust. SINCE THIS ITEM HAS HAD LIMITED TESTING. WE ARE SELLING THIS: AS-IS” NO RETURNS OR EXCHANGES” ALL SALES ARE FINAL” COSMETICALLY THIS VOLTMETER KIT IS IN GREAT SHAPE. ALL THE CONNECTIONS ARE CLEAN. THE 40kv GAUGE IS CLEAN AND EASY TO READ. THERE IS A GREEN MARK ON THE 40 LINE. THE SERIAL NUMBER IS IN PLACE AND IT HAS A TESTED DATE OF 11/20/09 ON THE SIDE OF THE YELLOW GAUGE HOUSING. THERE IS SOME MINOR DIRT RESIDUE ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE YELLOW HOUSINGS AT THE TOPS OF THE RESISTANCE ELEMENTS. I AM NOT AN ELECTRICIAN HOWEVER; I HAVE PERSONALLY INSPECTED AND TESTED THIS VOLTMETER TO THE BEST OF MY ABILITY. THE 40kv GAUGE IS CLEAN AND EASY TO READ. THE SWITCH MOVES BETWEEN C. CP, L, ... moreLP AND BT; WHEN I HOLD THE SWITCH TO BT(BATTERY TEST) THE GAUGE READS 40. WHEN I LET GO OF THE SWITCH. IT RETURNS TO 0. I CONNECTED THE BATTERY TO THE PROOF TEST BOX AND CONNECTED THE RESISTANCE ELEMENTS TOGETHER. I TESTED ALL 4 MODES AND RECEIVED THE FOLLOWING READINGS(THE BATTERIES MAY ALL NEED TO BE REPLACED) C = 45 CP = 7 L = 3 LP = 0 BT = 40 AFTER TAKING THE PROOF TESTS. I DISCONNECTED ALL LEADS AND PACKED EVERYTHING BACK INTO THE CASE AND SEALED IT CLOSED WITH A ZIP TIE.
