Maytag 72 Twin Gas Engine, 2 Maytag Champion Plugs, Eisemann Boots Hit & Miss
This is a Maytag two stroke-cycle twin cylinder gasoline engine that originally powered a Maytag wringer washing machine in 1946. The owner probably got rural power soon after that and electrified his wife's washing machine and saved this cute little engine inside somewhere. This fine original engine turns over and has compression but I never tried to make it run. It originally hung from the bottom of the washing machine. Someone made the crude wood enclosure it is still in in order to make it run and possibly use if for some chore on the farm. I bought this engine and muffler for $40 at an antique shop just east of Lewistown Montana back in 1976. I remember driving my 1975 Corvette convertible at that time and had quite a time figuring out how to haul this engine home in that car. 1946 Maytag Twin 72 D , original, running
Here I have a Maytag Twin Motor. The 7 digit serial number starts with 100. So it puts it right in the middle of 1946. As you can see by the pictures. It is not restored, it did not had its $ 400 paint job, and not the $ 200 tuneup. I would call this an honest example of an unmolested model. Some decals are still visible, but quite faded. The paint itself is ok to good, however, especially on the kicker cover it is mostly gone. Speaking of kick pedal: it is not bend or cracked. The cover is also not distorted or rusted through. All mounting bolts(tank, cylinders. appear to be original. The fins on the cylinders are ok as well. You can also identify it as a later model because of the cut outs on the upper fins to slide out the cylinder bolts easier. There are various tank(base) options on these Maytags, this one has the cast iron tank with ... morethe mounting threads at the bottom. What I did recently was. Remove the tank and cleaned/scraped the inside, cleaned the check valve(screen is defect, but valve works correctly) made sure all fuel and air passages are free and put 2 new spark plugs in. It did start up after a couple cranks with my hand, that's how easy they can be started if everything is just right. I have not removed the flywheel to check on condition of coil and points, but it produced a nice blue spark, so there was no need for me to dig deeper. I had it running for about 3 minutes and it run steady w/o hesitation. I noticed one shallow dent in the flywheel rim(not cracked) But where my finger is pointing, that's where it seems it has been dropped or bumped. Does not made a difference when running. It also has the pulley to drive whatever you desire. These items are often lost. It comes with the original Eisemann spark plug rubber boot. To sum it up. This particular example has a lot going for it. What you do from here on out is up to you. Give it a good rub with some oil, or go through a complete restoration(all correct parts are there) or take it apart and sell individual parts of it(I don't

EARLY 1938 ORIGINAL MAYTAG EISEMANN MODEL 72-D TWIN CYLINDER ENGINE ~ NICE! Fresh estate find. Looks to be nearly all original(the spark plugs may be replacements) and appears to have good compression! Serial number stamped at an angle on flywheel end is 840829. Placing it in the first couple production months of 1938. This engine has not been altered in any way, it is as found and as shown. I do not see any cracks or breaks. It appears solid and sound. Picked it up at a yard sale, I don't know anything about this kind of engine.It looks to be complete except for the muffler.It is also in need of spark plug wires.I think the one spark might be orignal, it looks like it is made of brass, it is a Motorcraft brand.When I first got the engine I couldn't get it running, so I took one of the plugs out to see if it had spark, gave it a couple of cranks and it started with one plug missing.It does run as you can see in pictures 8-9-10.The slant# on the flywheel is 915261. The motor weight is 51 lb's, the box is 23x13x13 and ships from zip 17052, maybe this would be cheaper for you. We ship only in the U.S.A. The rails were mounted to the engine when I received it and will stay with the engine. This engine has the heavy cast iron tank(base) There is a small chip in the kicker. Maytag model 72 twin cylinder hit and miss engine it was restored many years ago it was taken to some shows in the late 1980s it was part of the Florida Flywheelers Antique Engine Club its has been in climate controlled storage since the late 1980s early 1990s it has a very small amount of oil left in the bottom of the gas tank that needs to be drained and flushed and some fresh gas put In I did spray a little gas in the intake and it fired up on the first kick. Here is a working vintage 120 or 240 ac Volt Generator. It is made by Electric Motors and Specialties Co. Fort Wayne Indiana. I got this from a friend and it looks to be something that was added to this engine so I am keeping the engine for my collection and offering this Generator. Brackets and pulleys to you for yours or maybe for one of your small engines that you have been wanting to hook something to but you just haven't come up with the right thing yet? The unit has a plug on the back along with a ground lug, two power lugs and some kind of resistor on the side. I tested this with the meter and bulb as shown. I am not familiar with this but it looks vintage and would make a great winter project. It spins good but It feels like it has a slight growl or roughness in the ball bearings. I would replace them. PURCHASED AT A FARM ESTATE AUCTION 9 YEARS AGO. I intended to restore this engine myself. But time has gotten away from me and now I must downsize due to age and retirement. No cracks or welds. Does have a couple small chips out of two cylinder cooler fins(see photos) Engine will need a tune-up to run. Pistons are free and there seems to be some compression. One spark plug wire end has been replaced. Plugs and a flywheel tune up should be all she needs to fire up. Maytag Twin Runs Model 72 April 1947
Here is a nice Maytag Model 72 twin cylinder engine. It has serial number 101966 which gives it a production date of 4/47. The s/n is sharp even though it shows up bad in the pic from camera flash. It has the original Eisemann spark plug boots and also new Autolite spark plugs. The auctioneer said it ran so I put it on my pick up tail gate and it ran on the second push on the kick starter by hand. I only ran it a short time and later at home drained the fuel and mixed up some fuel with the correct 16 to 1 mix. I never trust that the right mix is in any 2 cycle I buy. The engine purred right along for at least a half hour. It ran just to right of"start" so the least it needs is an air tube adjustment and I am sure it would run even better with a good ck overtune up. It is running in the 2 pics where it is mounted on the board. It ... morelooked so good I thought it had been repainted but discovered later the remnants of the original decals on each end of the fuel tank. I tried to show those decals in the pics. One is not legeable at all and the other shows the OTOR part of"Maytag MULTI-MOTOR" There are a couple of scraches on the flywheel face I attempted to show in one pic. Someone put on what looks like a red rubber gas tank gasket. That is a pretty neat wood base with leather handles. It could stand a little work as the only thing really holding the engine to it is where the wing nut is. I will wire tie. With big ones, the other end for shipping and the start pedal and spark plugs will be removed also. You will find the spark plugs packed in a seperate box and the spark plug holes plugged. I will also insure it for full auction value. NOTE NOTE == You will find the spark plug wires grounded. It is common knowledge that you should never crank over the Maytag twin. Which has a"pass through" ignition coil, without the plug wires hooked to the plugs or otherwise grounded. There is a good chance coil damage will result. PAYMENT is by PAYPAL ONLY.
