Vintage 1910 FE Thomas, Bangor, Me. Dirigo Bamboo Trout Fly Rod, Two tips, 9 1/2
Search This is a vintage Thomas fly rod. Made in bangor maine. This rod has two tips, each with a different style end on it, Im guessing its a wet fly and dry fly tip but not sure. All four pieces are straight and true with no bends. One tip is about 5/16 of an inch shorter than the other but one of the metal tips is 3/16 of an inch longer than the other, being a different style, so that accounts for part of the difference in length-the tips appear to have never been broken or repaired. Butt section is 38 8/16 long, center section is 38 8/16 long, one tip is 38 7/16 and the other is 38 2/16 long. The rod appears to be complete and is marked Dirigo FE Thomas Bangor Me on the reel seat. Reel seat appears to be nickle plated and has what I think is called a rolled soldered slide bar. I did some research but correct me if Im mistaken about names/details ... moreof this item. I was told and believe that the finish on the rod is the original varnish. The butt section and center section need to have the line guides rewrapped as they have been attached in a very sloppy manner, as shown in the pics. The two tips look to be in great shape however with all the guides securely attached. The rod measures 114 1/2 inches( 9 1/2 feet) when assembled but I did not really"jam" the sections together for fear of not being able to get them apart again. I believe the cork grip is referred to as sheet wrapped. Two tips come in a round bamboo storage case with a screw on cap. Bamboo case fits into the original canvas rod sack along with the butt and center sections. Canvas case is marked with the name LAWRENCE, I assume the original owner but dont know. This is a great rod but does need some repair work. I am not an expert on fly rods and got most of the info off the internet so please ask questions if you have any. 8' F.E. Thomas Bangor Bamboo Fly Rod made for Kerr’s of Beverly Hills
F.E. Thomas Bangor Rod made for Kerr’s of Beverly Hills. CA: 8’ 3/2, 4/5 weight, excellent, restored. F E Thomas Bangor: 8' 3/2, 5 weight, excellent, partially restored. This medium action dry fly rod was made by F. E. Thomas for Kerr's of Beverly Hills. It has a Kerr's decal in excellent condition just above the signature wraps and the same decal on the rod tube. The reel seat is an all nickel silver down-locking style with The Bangor Rod stamped into the back of the reel seat. The 5 1/2 inch cigar shaped grip is in fine clean condition. The size 10 and 16 ferrules are bright nickel silver and fit tightly. The wraps are dusky red with no trim. The fine dry fly tips taper to.055 just below the tip wraps. I have replaced a couple of the wraps, polished the varnish to remove some minor scuffs and re-blacked the nickel silver tip-tops. ... moreThe second tip has a higher grade FE Thomas ferrule on it, which I salvaged from another F. E. Thomas tip to replace the original missing ferrule. The rod is now in excellent condition for use and as a wonderful and rare addition to a collection of fine rods. The brown bag and rod tube are both original and show only minor wear. The Bangor models are actually the rarest of the three F. E. Thomas grades and were initially introduced during the Great Depression to offer anglers a lower priced option than the Dirigos and Specials. The hanging tag on the rod bag has the correct data and the serial number A294 with which you can verify the original rod specifications and year of make from the current owner of the F.E. Thomas Rod Co.

For sale is a vintage bamboo fly rod made in Bangor. Maine by F. E. Thomas. It is a special 8 feet in length assembled. Butt cap has 365 struck into it. The rod comes with 2 tips as it should. It is in beautiful condition with the only flaw being the butt end cap having some dings as you can see in the photo. The rod comes in the soft bag and hard tube with brass end caps. This listing is for an original 1935 THOMAS FISHING RODS catalog"A catalog of high-grade split bamboo fishing rods" from the Thomas Rod Company Bangor Maine. 9" X 4" Illustrated. 36 pages in VG+ complete and clean, has fading on edges of cover. Fred E. Thomas first crafted split bamboo fishing rods under the Thomas name in the late 1890's. After an association with some of the other great masters of his craft, Hiram Leonard, Eustis Edwards and Ed Payne. F.E. as he was known, got his start in the rod making business as an employee of Hiram Leonard, and the H.L. Leonard Rod Co. in Bangor, Maine, and later in Central Valley, NY after Leonard moved his rod making facility there in the late 1880's. In 1893, F.E. along with two other fellow Leonard craftsmen, Eustis Edwards and Ed Payne, formed the now historic partnership ... moreknown as Thomas, Edwards and Payne, in Central Valley, New York. It was this partnership that crafted the rare and sought after"Kosmic Rod" In 1898, the partnership disolved, and F.E. moved back home to Brewer, Maine, along with his partner E.W. Edwards, to form the short lived Thomas and Edwards Co. After a short partnership crafting rods sold under names like Empire City Tackle, F.E. went on his own, and the F.E. Thomas Rod Co. was born. Fred first opened the F.E. Thomas Rod Co. in Brewer, at 52 Center Street, only a short distance from our current shop, and remained here until 1902. In 1902 Fred moved the shop across the Penobscot River to Exchange Street in Bangor and remained at this location until 1923, when he finally moved the shop to his newly built rod shop on Park Street hill in Bangor. The Thomas Rod Company's business had now grown to include a world wide following and the shop now employed as many as a dozen skilled craftsman. F.E. Thomas Special 9' Trout 3pc Bamboo Fly Rod Orig Bag & Tube Bangor, Maine
Early. Pre-1937 F.E. Thomas Special, 3 piece, 2 tip rod has rarely seen cork cap and ring seat, half wells grip, and scarce red silk and black tipped wrap combination, with full intermediate windings. Beautiful Agate stripping guide. And reverse twist snake guides. Mid section on this rod is 3/4" short. And 2nd tip is 2 1/2" short. 1st tip and Butt section are full length. 2nd tip has elongated snake guides and a strut style tip top. But is obviously original. Chances are that this was either one of the very few rods that were actually made with two different tips. Or this tip was made at the Thomas shop as a replacement later on. Either way, the rod is completely original, and a great example of an early Thomas Special. Varnish is in excellent condition. And this rod would be ready to fish. This interesting old fishing rod is marked F.E.Thomas Special Bangor. Maine. Also, there is a patent date June 1913. There are 5 pieces plus a large tip carrier part. The five pieces are all 63" long. There are a few missing guides and a few loose wraps but otherwise all looks OK. The tips look unused. The cork has some dings but it is intact. Using three pieces the rod assembles to about 15 feet. The number 9 with a dot under the tail in stamped on the butt end of the rod. See photos for details and other aspects of condition. This is a Thomas Chub 10 1/2' bamboo fly rod. Comes in the formed wooden case covered by a cloth bag. The rod has the drop ring guides. Two of the rings are missing from the mid section& one tip is missing three rings. The other tip is missing one ring. This rod has been re-finished through the years. All of the male ferrules are spiked. One tip is missing the tip top guide and Both tips appear to be just a 1/4" shorter than the mid and butt sections. The photo's show the condition well. The rod was made between 1923 and 1926 and sold at the J.B. Hunter Co. 60 Summer Street. Boston, Mass indicated by etched in metal at bottom of rod. The rod was built by Fred Thomas according to an ad for the rod found by goggling the store name from 1923. The ad indicated that the price for the rod in 1923 was $16.00 The rod is in terrific condition considering it is 90 years old and has a few minor blemishes in the finish(see photos) Cork handle. Antique Thomas Chubb bamboo fishing rod - c. 1890-1910
You are bidding on a Thomas H. Chubb bamboo fishing rod. Some of you will recognize this rod as one. Out of a collection of three, that I had on offer on eBay last week. Well, that collection of the three rods did not sell, so I have decided to split up that"mini collection" and sell this rod individually. I have also decided to do something I almost never do, and that is, list a rather valuable item with a extremely low(silly) start price, and with NO RESERVE. It is a bit of a risk. Of course, but I believe that enough antique bamboo rod collectors, as well as a number of experts on fly rods, and vintage fishing gear, have viewed this rod, that it will ultimately end up selling for about what it should sell for. We'll see! I'll take the risk. It is Christmas, after all. And one thing I know for certain, having bid on enough ... morenice items on eBay, myself, over the years, is that No Reserve auctions are the most FUN. You never know just how low the item may sell for; things slip"under the radar" often enough, on eBay. With regard to the rod's description: I estimate that the rod is at least 100 years old. Though I can't prove that. I am not an antique bamboo rod expert, or authority. That being said, I have done a fair bit of reading up on Thomas H. Chubb fishing rods during the past few weeks(1888- 1891 Chubb catalogs, antique fly fishing guides, various Google Books internet sources, etc. and I feel pretty confident to date the rods to 1900, plus or minus 10 years. I have also consulted, via the fly fishing forums, with numerous authorities on bamboo rod identification/appraisal, and the consensus is that it is reasonable to believe this rod was made circa 1900. Though there was no consensus on the exact age of the rod. There was, among the experts, unanimous agreement that the rod is very nice. A very fine example of an early Chubb rod. The rod is bamboo. This was used on several models of H.L. Leonard and F.E. Thomas as well as many other makers of bamboo fly rods. Vintage bamboo fly rod. Metal reel seat is marked"F. E. Thomas Special. Bangor, Me. Maine) Butt is also marked"A 470. Rod measures about 8 1/2 feet long. Two tip sections are included. One is darker than the other and about an inch or less longer than the other. This darker tip section is also a bit less in diameter than the other sections. Sighting down the tips they appear fairly straight, with slight bends. Rod is pretty clean and may have been restored and or refinished at one time. It appears to be pretty fishable. 9' F.E. Thomas Dry Fly Special split bamboo fly rod. 5 1/8 oz. all original, full length, original bag and hang tag. Overall very good condition. Quality aluminum tube, but I don't know if the tube is original. Ferrules are in excellent condition, no missing guides, but varnish is showing some signs of age. Honest wear to the varnish on the reel seat. Nickel-silver sliding band reel seat. I've had this rod in my closest for about 12 years and haven't used it, so have decided to sell. This rod has very light tips, so I'm guessing that it work well with a 5 weight DT line. Returns accepted only if I have grossly misdescribed the rod. Thi s auction is for a very rare F.E. Thomas built 8 ft two piece Browntone bamboo fly rod. It is in very good to excellent original condition- see pictures. Rod comes complete with original sock(blue) Labeled tube, brass cap and hang tag- see pictures. As per tag, rod measures 4 1/8 oz's. All sections are full length and complete. There is an invisible repair wrap at the base of one tip. Original tube label is approximately 80% complete. Definite dry fly action- extremely fine tips with swelled butt(tips measure.060" almost an inch below tip top and butt measures.470"+ just above grip) Original English twist guides and perfection stripper guide are all in excellent condition. Original varnish is still very good- could use a polishing. A very fast action split cane fly rod capable of very tight loops. Rod handles a DT 5 line ... moreexceptionally well. Darkly blued ferrules over browntone cane fit well and separate with a pop. All wraps look to be in excellent original condition. F. E. Thomas Special Bamboo Fly Rod; 8'6" - 3/2 - 6 wt. rod; Final Reduction
This is an 8'6" 3 piece- 2 tip F. E. Thomas Special bamboo rod for a 6 weight line. The rod is in excellent refinished condition. The rod was beautifully refinished when I purchased it several years ago. And has only been fished a few times since. Rod weighs 4.5 ounces with 17/11 ferrules. I like it best with a WF6 line. Pre-1937 rod marked 31 inside 3 concentric circles on bottom of butt cap. Correct. Legible die stamp marking on butt cap. English twist guides with agate stripper. Tight fitting ferrules that pop nicely on separation. Grip and seat are excellent with no issues. Correct tube with nearly complete label. Tube has one ventilation hold drilled in cap and 4 holes drilled in the bottom. Original bag will be included. But shows wear and repairs. FE THOMAS BANGOR ME SPECIAL 9ft Split Bamboo Trout Fly Rod
Back in my younger days I used to restore fly rods like this one. I just do not have the time anymore. But this will be a good project rod for someone. The butt and mid sections each measure 36-1/2" long and are full-length. The tip measures only 32-1/2" long and at first does not appear to be the correct tip for this rod, judging by the wraps. However, the ferrule matches up exactly! Construction is 6-strip split-bamboo with German silver hardware and an agate stripper guide. The butt and mid sections are straight, the tip has a slight bend. All three sections are sound with no dried out glue or separations. The end of the butt cap has a"9" stamped on it, also a small dent. Several of the guides are missing, but these are the usual snake type and easy enough to replace. A 2/2 impregnated rod. Featuring straw colored bamboo, 3 x 3 nodes, chrome guides anchored with goldenrod silks, and super-Z style ferrules with the T&T stamping. The cork grip transitions into the cork reel seat, which has an aluminum cap and sliding band(initials scratched into the cap) The cap is stamped with the Thomas& Thomas logo. All sections are full length with no fishing sets. The inscription inked on the butt reads"6' 6"3-4, Special Trouter, No. 3373" That serial number is also inked on each tip. Thomas J Conroy Vintage Bamboo Fly Fishing Rod

This 3 piece refinished rod measures about 9' in overall length with the tip being about 6" shorter than the other sections. The cork handle is wire wrapped. Here is a Custom made rod.I think.purchased at an Estate Sale about 10 years ago. This is a 2/2 9 foot rod that's straight and true. Each tip has a slightly different male ferrule. But the performance is the same. The rod is labeled a 7/8 weight, but I found a WF-7 ideal. I used the rod on the Russian in Alaska for Silvers and Dolly Varden and in British Columbia for Bull Trout and the rod was marvelous. It may be a home made rod from an amateur maker, but to me it feels and looks more like a refinished Edwards or Thomas canoe rod. The cork and reel seat appear as new. Comes with Orvis type aluminum tube. Ferrules fit tight, rod is straight, no repairs, nice wraps, feels light to the hand for a 9 footer. F.E. Thomas Special Bamboo Fly Rod- 1936 Browntone
I am selling my 1936 F.E. Thomas Special Browntone 9ft. 3 pcs, 5 ½ oz vintage bamboo fly rod. This rod was passed down in the family. And I do not have much history on it. It appears to be restored at some point in its life and is in immaculate condition. There is plastic still on the cork handle. I have had this reviewed by experts at Thomas and they have confirmed the year 1936 by the diamond stamp on the rod butt. The screw locking section of the reel seat appears to have been replaced during refinishing as well. The rod comes with an extra tip that is missing the top rod guide. Vintage F.E. Thomas Bangor Split Bamboo Fly Rod 8' 3/2 FREE SHIPPING
Up for sale is my F.E. Thomas Bangor rod. This rod is an 8' long 3 piece rod with 2 tip sections. Unfortunately. As you can see in the photos, one of the tips is snapped off about 1/12' from the tip top. This think this rod feels best with a 5wt DT line. I assume if you are looking at this auction you already know about this maker and this particular model. So I will skip the flowery description. I would say the rod is in very good overall condition with the exception of the broken tip top and one missing signature wrap. This auction is for a vintage Thomas& Thomas 7' Bamboo flyrod- The Classic" I believe this rod is from the late 1960's. Takes a 3 weight line. Has two tips- one tip was cracked and has been repaired by a rod builder. Fishes well with either tip. Original tube and cloth sleeve. Note. It has been brought to my attention that serial# 2392 indicates that this is 392nd rod built starting in 1969. That would date rod in early 1970's.

Original Condition. Non restored Thomas Chubb premium cane rod circa 1890's Estate sale find from Down East Swansboro North Carolina. Super Old Antique Thomas Chubb Bamboo Can Rod. Rod still sports period T. Chubb star emblem which is in very good condition. Red silk thread is good except for one eyelet were there is a little fraying. Rod has a red(porcelain? insert in the first large eyelet. All of the smaller eyelets swing and fold down. This is a four piece set with 2 end tips of slightly different lengths. F.E. Thomas Special Browntone 9 ft. 3 pcs, 2 tips, 6.2 oz vintage bamboo fly rod. This browntone Tonkin cane swelled butt rod is in very good original condition with no repairs. All sections are full length and straight and in exceptional condition. The ferrules are blued and fit together smoothly. It has a screw-locking walnut reel seat. A solid cork grip and the guides are nicely wound in brown silk. All wraps and guides appear to be original. This rod has been fished lightly and the varnish is in good original condition with a few"hook dings" This rod is handsome and ready to fish or display. FE THOMAS " DIRIGO" SPLIT BAMBOO FLY ROD BANGOR ME w/ EXTRA TIPS !!!!
Up for auction is an early F E Thomas Dirigo split bamboo fly rod in beautiful condition. I purchased this at an estate sale several years ago where their were many other Thomas rods for sale. I will do the best I can to describe this as I am no expert. I believe this to be a 9' 6" Atlantic Salmon Dry Fly Rod with fighting butt that attaches to the end of the butt section. Stamped on the end of the butt section is Dirigo F.E. Thomas Bangor. M.E. and G 31. The G 31 is also present on the end of the fighting butt so they are matching numbers. Probably was a 3 pc 2 tip rod originally but for this auction there are 5 tips. I am uncertain if they were all originally included or if the original owner had some extra tips made. All of the sections of this rod are in wonderful condition including the ferrules, corks, tips, reel seat, english ... moretwist snake guides and nice tight red silk wraps. Rod tip lengths are as follows: 2) at 38 1/2 inches, 36 1/2, 36 1/4 and 34 1/8. All measurements were taken to the end of the ferrule. This auction also includes rod bag, original Thomas hang tag and aluminum rod tube. Please take a look at all photos and ask any questions before bidding and I will do the best I can to answer them. Custom Bamboo Fly Rod FE Thomas 7ft Special Taper 4wt Western Grip Walnut seat
Brand New Hand made Fly Rod offered F.E Thomas Special Taper 7ft 2/2 4/5wt. The bamboo was hand split. Glued, wrapped and heated to a nice rich caramel color. Blued Nickel Silver hardware, nice Dark grain Walnut seat, chrome guides, solid nickel silver super Z type ferrules, chrome striper guide finished with and wrapped with a vintage Gudebrod Chestnut Silk that blends very well with the color of the bamboo. Nice classic vintage looking new Western Style cork grip. The colors used blend very well together on this fly rod it is gorgeous. The F.E Thomas Special Taper was planed from the Presidential Taper list according to the Gould's Tips& Tapers. Nice action 4 wt will also throw a 5wt.
