ANTIQUE STEAM ENGINE BRASS FLYBALL FOR GOVERNOR?
This came for a old farm estate. I beleive it is a type of flyball for a steamengine's governor. It is solid brass with a metal spindle. The flyballs go up and down with centrifugal force. They are atteched to jointed arms that are connected to a lower main brass piece that the spindle slides through. This main piece does not move up or down and I'm not sure if it even should. And if so it is possible that it is frozen on the spindle because of dissimilar metals. The upper brass body is attached to the spindle by one screw which also is frozen. The end of the spindle is twisted like a drill bit and has a point at the end. Spindle is 7" long. The balls ar 3/4" in diameter and when straight out reach 4 1/2" apart. Gunther Wright Flyball Governor, Live Steam Tractor Engine, Hit and Miss
I am not a steam engine person. But I will do my best to describe this item accurately. This is a Gunther Wright Machine Co. Owensboro Ky. flyball governor. It is patent dated April 1 9. 1898. It says it is 3/4 inch. It has another number stamped in that I assume is the serial number. It is 304 7. On the opposite side it is stamped"rev 550" The unit has been taken apart and thoroughly cleaned. It has also been repainted with the colors that were on it. I do not know if these are the original colors. This governor turn s quite freely. T he unit measures almost 20" high and is 10-1/2" at its widest point. The only flaw is that the flat pulley has a small broken piece on the side that has been epoxyed in place. Please call Jim@ 419-308-4812 if you have any questions.

This is a real nice original pair of governor brackets for an Associated or United hit and miss gas engine. They are part number EWW and mount to the flywheel with two 3/8 inch holes 3 1/4 inches apart on center. They are in excellent condition with no cracks. This is a real nice original cast iron drive pulley for a Pickering governor. I'm sure it would work for any governor but it came from a Pickering. It is in in excellent condition with no cracks. Breaks, or repairs of any kind. It measures about 1 3/4 inches wide and about 6 1/2 inches in diameter. It will easily accommodate a 1 1/4 inch wide belt. It fits on a 5/8 inch shaft and has a E2308 part number. It is ready to be used on a governor. These original drive pulleys are extremely tough to find in the wild or even at swap meets so if you've been looking for one for your steam project here it is. The pictures tell the story. Old Fuller Johnson Hit Miss Gas Engine Governor Detent Steam Tractor Magneto
This is a real nice original governor detent or hookup for a Fuller and Johnson N gas engine. It is in excellent condition with no cracks. Breaks, or repairs of any kind. It pivots with a 1/2 inch hole and is part number 11N71. I believe this if for the smaller 1 1/2 and 2hp engines but may fit the larger engines as well as the vertical farm pump engine. It has very little wear and is ready to go to work on an engine. These are often broken, repaired, or missing so if you need one here's a nice one. Large Old Steam Engine Governor The Pickering Governor Co Portland CT 1885
Up for auction is an old steam engine governor made by the Pickering Co from Portland. CT. Newest patent date is 1885. Serial num 198779. 380 Rev. Measures about 29 inches long at the longest points and about 16& 1/2 inches at the widest points. It does turn with some force. 3 balls. Springs appear to be decent. One small gear has wear and is missing teeth(view pic) Brass nut shows some wear. One side of the cast wheel is bent. Other side may have a ship. Other than what I mentioned I see no cracks, chips or welds. Governor was sandblasted. Still needs cleaned more. It is heavy. Buyer pays shipping in the U.S. Good luck and God Bless!

I believe this was used previously on a traction engine or a VERY large stationary steam engine. 23" tall. 13" wide at its widest point. Bottom flange is 7" in diameter. Old Fuller Johnson N Throttling Governor Hit Miss Gas Engine Carb Mixer Steam
This is an EXTREMELY hard to find original fuel mixer for a Fuller and Johnson throttling governor kerosene engine. It is in good condition with no cracks. Breaks, or repairs. The fuel needles are stuck but I'm sure they would move with a little heat. This mixer mounts to the engine with 2 bolts on 3 inch centers. It is for a 7hp engine but may fit other sizes as well. It could always be adapted to fit your engine as these mixers for engines of any size are almost impossible to find. With just a little elbow grease this will be a perfect mixer. This fly ball governor has the name plate on it that has Pickering 450 Revs. There is a casting no on the gear case F432. The flat belt pulley is 3-1/2" di. with a 2-1/4" face. Everything moves and turns as it should. There is not much play in the gear teeth. The cast iron mounting bracket is 11" tall. 9-1/4" wide. There are traces of red paint remaining. The only thing I see wrong is the flyball springs need replacing. They are rusted through. There are no breaks or welds. I have never seen one of these that has such an odd cast iron mounting bracket. It appears to be a governor that mounts horizontally. The shaft oil cup is horizontal. steam engine flyball governor Gardner 2-1/2" gravity type
Gardner steam engine governor. 2-1/2" gravity type which uses no springs. Light surface rust on the cast iron, but it's good iron and doesn't rust much. Everything moves. The valve spool is out of the body, as pictured. Don't have the length of flatbar for the sliding weight, which counterweights the flyball weights. You'll have to make that, and the pivot for it. The extended studs support a pivot for the flatbar, though I'm not exactly sure how it was done. You'll want to examine another governor and imitate it. This governor is heavy: 75 lbs. I can dismantle it and ship in two boxes for UPS. Figure two boxes of 38 lbs or so, from 98261. I'll mark this for"local pickup" but I'm happy to UPS the thing.

This interesting flyball controlled governor was used over top of an elevator to control the speed and act as a brake should it sense something wrong. Like a broken cable. The label gives the feet per minute it was designed to run at, and the higher# that would set it off and trip the locking jaw feature should things get out of control. I see no breaks, damage, or issues. It turns or revolves easily. Reading the label we see it was made for 6 x 19 ... more1/2" steel cable. Note that it has an Otis Elevator install tag on it. Gardner steam engine flyball governor 2-1/2" upper half only
Gardner steam engine governor. The upper assembly, probably was 2-1/2" Flange measures 6-1/2" diameter. Serial number 269700. Weights are 3" diameter. Height of this assembly is 17-1/2" from flange to top of weights. Length of pulley shaft is 18" and looks like 15/16" diameter. The vertical shaft turns, the amount of gear clearance anyway, but the horizontal shaft is probably quite stuck with rust. I have not made any attempt to turn it or clean up this old relic. Bevel gears have all of their teeth. Someone has removed the pin from one of the weights and inserted it back into its yoke. No idea why. steam engine governor upper assembly unknown maker
Governor of the gearless type. With belt pulley integral with the flyweight shaft. There is no name or number on it. Diameter of flange is 4-1/2" and height from flange to top of shaft is 14" Belt pulley is 3" diameter. This unit is pretty rusty. Fortunately it's all cast iron except for the pins. The weight-yokes are all intact. The only broken part is the sawyer's lever. I assume there is a spring inside the vertical casting, but I don't know for sure. This unit weighs 14 lbs.

PICKERING GOVERNOR FOR LIVE STEAM ENGINE
This is a very nice Pickering governor suitable for small to medium-sized engines. It looks as if it's meant to be mounted vertically and control a valve in the steam line via the little tail at the bottom which hooks into the linkage rods that I just found while writing this listing. The governor is a bit stiff. But turns freely enough that I'm certain that it needs only lubrication to function properly(NEWS FLASH! I took it down to the workshop and lubricated it a bit; it turns well now) The gears mesh well and are not visibly worn or damaged, nor are there cracks or chips in the cast iron body. The big flange can be removed and a pulley can be substituted. The brass collar contains the Pickering maker's information. Including serial number 286221 and the“500 REV” speed limit notice. It looks as if there's an adjustment ... morescrew there to fine-tune the speed. All in all. It's a very nice piece of work. It deserves a good home, not a shelf in my barn. Old 3/4 Inch Pickering Steam Tractor Engine Governor Hit Miss Magneto NICE!!
This is an extremely nice original 3/4 inch Pickering governor for a steam engine. Gas engine, or tractor. It was made by the Pickering Governor Company in Portland, Connecticut. It is in excellent condition with no cracks, breaks, or repairs of any kind except for a chipped pipe nipple which can easily be replaced. It turns nicely and has very mild wear in the horizontal shaft bearing and on the gears. It has the original drive pulley on it. The 3/4 inch pipe threads are in great shape. Everything on this governor moves freely. The governor measures about 15 inches tall overall. The only real flaw I've noted is that it is missing 1/2 of one of the fly balls which shouldn't be too tough to find or make. It just threads onto the stud. These governors are almost impossible to find in the wild or even at swap meets so if you've been ... morelooking for on here's your chance. Large 23" t Pickering Steam Engine Flyball Governor s/n 267262B REV 380 hit miss
UP FOR AUCTION Is a Vintage Large 23" tall Pickering Steam Engine governor WARNING! I am selling this as a display piece. Due to its age and condition I am not sure it would be safe to use. Up for auction is a Very Large and Heavy not to mention Rusty Pickering steam engine Governor that came from an old barn dirt floor. This governor was actually mostly buried under the dirt when a friend found it. I purchased it from him to use as a display piece in my living room but I never got around to building a display stand for it. I love old steam engines and the nostalgia that they have. I have not attempted to remove the rust from the governor. My friend had sprayed the majority of the mud and dirt from it. When I got it it was froze up. I cleaned the majority of the left over mud and dirt from it and I also sprayed it with break free to ... moreloosen the moving parts. I let it sit for a few days and then lightly tapped the gears and moving parts and now they all move freely. As you can see it had a previous repair on the drive shaft from where the pully was located. My intentions on this piece was to build a floor stand for it that was also going to be a floor lamp that would have a brass riveted lamp shade on it but with a new baby on the way I do not have a lot of time to work on projects such as this. Waters Steam Engine Governor shaft casting Hit Miss Gas Engine Steam Oiler NICE!
This auction is for the shaft casting and pulley of a Waters Governor. What is in the pictures is what you get. The two shaft casting mounting holes are on 3 1/2" centers. The shaft casting is 6" long. The shaft diameter is 3/4" The pulley is 6" in diameter X 2 1/2" wide. No breaks or repairs. Shaft is tight but turns. Hopefully some part of this helps someone.

This is an extremely hard to find original Pickering governor for an Eagle tractor. I believe it was used on several sizes of the tractor. It is in excellent condition with no cracks. Breaks, or repairs that I can see or know about. It has the original drive pulley on it and also the original brass linkage arm. It is missing the original cast iron cover but I'm sure you could scare one of those up or borrow one to have casted. It has very little wear in the bearing or on the shaft or the gear teeth. It turns smoothly and is ready to be used on a tractor or put on the shelf for a spare. These original governors hardly ever turn up in the wild or even at swap meets and the loose ones that are out there are tightly in collectors hands so don't miss your chance on this nice one. Old Evans Oilfield Hit Miss Gas Engine Governor Bracket Steam Tractor Oiler NICE
This is a very nice original cast iron fitting that was used to mount a Pickering or other governor on an Evans oilfield type hit and miss gas engine. It is in excellent condition with no cracks. Breaks, or repairs of any kind. It has 1 inch female pipe threads in it and they are in great shape. It mounts with two 9/16 inch holes 3 3/4 inches apart on center. It has nice original green paint on it and is ready to be used on an engine or put on the shelf as a spare. These originals don't turn up very often so don't miss your chance on this one. Old FAIRBANKS MORSE Z 10 15hp Hit Miss Gas Engine Governor Steam Tractor NICE!!
This is a rather tough to find original governor for a larger Fairbanks and Morse Z gas engine. I believe it fits on the 10 and 15hp spark plug fired engines but please do your homework to be sure it fits your application. It is in excellent condition with no cracks. Breaks, or repairs of any kind. There is very little noticeable wear anywhere on the gear or on the shafts or pins. It mounts with two holes 5 1/4 inches apart on center. It has the throttle arm on it it is ready to go to work on an engine or it would also make a great spare on the shelf. These are getting harder to find every day! The pictures tell the story. It is smaller in size, measuring approx 9" tall, and weighing approx 4 lbs. As seen, one of the balls is broken off, and the bottom gear has a couple of lightly chipped teeth. Otherwise. This is a rather hard to find original drive pulley for a Pickering or other make of governor. These governors were commonly used on steam engines and some larger gas engines and tractors. It is in excellent used condition with no cracks. Breaks, or repairs of any kind. It measures about 3 1/2 inches in diameter with a 2 3/4 inch pulley machined into it. The face for the belt is about 2 1/8 inches wide. It is about 3 3/4 inches long overall and has a 5/8 inch hole with a set screw to tighten onto the drive shaft of the governor. These original pulleys are extremely tough to find in the wild or even at swap meets and they aren't that easy to reproduce! This one is ready to go to work. Old 1 1/4" WATERS Steam Engine Tractor Governor Hit Miss Gas Magneto Oiler NICE
This is a very hard to find original Waters 1 1/4 inch governor. These were commonly used on steam engines as well as a few gas engines. It was made by the Waters Governor Company in Boston. Mass. and is in excellent used condition with no cracks, breaks, or repairs of any kind. The drive shaft with the drive pulley on it is spring loaded and has a pin to hold it in a positive position. The hole for the pin is worn a bit and the pin doesn't stay in tightly without a holder but this could easily be remedied with a better, more square hole to collar that holds it in the positive position. It has little noticeable wear on the gears or on the shaft. Everything seems to move as it should. It stands about 24 inches tall overall. The hole pattern on the flanges is 2 5/8 inches square and the hole on each side are 1 1/4 inches in diameter. This is called a flyball governor or a centrifugal governor. The Flyball Governor works thusly; power is supplied to the governor from the engine's output shaft by a belt connected to the flywheel. The governor is connected to a throttle valve that regulates the flow of steam supplying the prime mover. This in turn regulates amount of pressure acting on the piston. Frick steam engine mount for Pickering governor - key words hit miss
This original casting is from an 8& 1/2 by 10 Frick steam engine- either portable or traction engine. It is to mount the Pickering governor to the valve chest. So as to raise it and align it with the steam pipe coming off the steam dome. It should fit any Frick engine requiring a 2 inch governor, and so would work on a few other size engines, as well. The four base mounting holes are about 3& 1/2 inches on center. The two bolts are the original bolts for attaching the governor on top. The Pickering governor for a Frick engine came with a valve body that bolted to this top flange and didn't use pipe threads. It is in very good condition, no CBW's. It is dirty, but only lightly rusted, there is no rust pitting.

Original OTTAWA Log Saw Hit Miss Gas Engine Governor Steam Tractor Magneto Oiler
This is an original governor for an Ottawa Log Saw gas engine. It's in good used condition with an old weld repair where the push rod goes through. It has little wear on the governor shaft or on the gear teeth and the weights move as they should. It mounts with two holes 1 3/4 inches on center. Please measure your engine to be sure it works for your application. It might not be perfect but it's in pretty good shape and certainly better than none all. These original parts are quite tough to find in the wild or even at swap meets! If you've been looking for one to complete a restoration here's your chance.
