The mechanics all move smoothly. The paper on the tray is from the 1970s so this was still in use locally not too long ago. I believe this to be complete except for the ink rollers. Here is a vintage Kelsey& Co Excelsior Mercury tabletop letterpress. Model N, size 3x5. Made in Meriden, Conn, USA. It works freely, oiled, maintained well. Has the rollers. The rollers were restored at some point and works great. The ink pan turns every time the handle is pulled. It measures 19" long, 15" high and 10" wide. It's ready to go and start printing, works good. Comes with some ink, the ink roller and some type and type holder. The ink is used. This was used for making retail tags. Kelsey Mercury Model P 5-8 Excelsior Hand Lever Platen Letterpress This is a fully functional table-top platen lever press manufactured by Kelsey& Company. As shown in the photos it is complete with all parts and ready to produce. This hand lever press is in good working condition. But has not been used in more than 40 years. I obtained it from a business sale in 1973 and have not used it for printing since then. The press still operates smoothly but the working parts need cleaning and lubrication to function at their best. Some parts have dried ink on them. But this can be removed with solvent. The original paint finish on the press is generally in good condition with few chips or nicks. There is no rust on any of the working parts. This late manufacture Kelsey Model P includes the l ocking bed feature not found on the earlier manufactured ... moremodels. It also includes an impression counter that is operated by the action of the press handle. The Kelsey presses are no longer in production and therefore will continue to increase in value as collectors acquire them. Information. Supplies and instruction for the use of the press can readily be found on the internet. The Press measures 24' long x 16' high x 14' wide and weighs 68 lbs with rollers and trucks installed. The press is mounted on a 16 inch square 3/4 inch thick plywood base. Antique Kelsey & Company Model 3 X 5 Excelsior Printing Letter Press
First off. I don't know much of anything about printing presses, but I will describe as best as possible. The is an antique Excelsior Letter Press that prints a 3" by 5" card. It is marked on the handle as well as the base. Size is about 8&1/2" by 19, and it weighs about 32 pounds. The plate with the letters in it has a patent date on the bottom- hard to read, but I think it is 1893. Condition is as found and as shown. While I don't know if it's missing anything else, it is missing the flat round plate. The print rollers look quite dry and I would guess that they need to be replaced. Other than that, it looks good to me. Please look at all of my photos for best idea of quality and condition. That's all I can tell you about this. It has been previously used was tested and works well. It is one of its older models. It is a hand operated platen letterpress. It has two rollers that only lack the spun rubber that goes on them that allows you to print on the machine. Cosmetically the machine is in good working condition for its age. We cleaned it up as best we could on its metal/steel parts. Heavy duty and well built. Finding out more information on the machine simply requires utilizing the internet. Weighs almost 70 pounds before packing. The rubber rollers that need to be recovered for the press can be found online as well. On one side of the printing press. It says"Pat: March 20, 1928" and"Send for a Catalog of Supplies. On the other side. It says"Excelsior" and"Made in USA. It is one of the rare ones that have the"Kelsey Excelsior" logo. On the handle. It says"Kelsey& Co. USA, Meriden, Conn. Size 3 x 5. It is missing the rollers. Of course. I don't think there is anything else missing but please see the many photos I've taken to be sure it meets with your expectations. It appears to be in overall excellent condition. Sure to please.
