This is a vintage Ideal#2 stencil cutting machine that cuts 5/8" letters and numbers. It is still operative- even though a portion of the circular handle on the top is broken off and missing. You turn the round handle to the letter or number you wish. Then press down the lever at the front. This cuts the letter or number into the cardboard. There is another lever to reset the machine. It also has a nice little impression counter attached to the press. This counter can be easily taken off if not wanted. There is no mechanical mechanism attached to the counter because the impression platen simply moves an arm on the counter each time you make an impression. It seems like a very handy thing to have. Kelsey Mercury Model P 5-8 Excelsior Hand Lever Platen Letterpress This is a fully functional table-top platen lever press manufactured by Kelsey& Company. As shown in the photos it is complete with all parts and ready to produce. This hand lever press is in good working condition. But has not been used in more than 40 years. I obtained it from a business sale in 1973 and have not used it for printing since then. The press still operates smoothly but the working parts need cleaning and lubrication to function at their best. Some parts have dried ink on them. But this can be removed with solvent. The original paint finish on the press is generally in good condition with few chips or nicks. There is no rust on any of the working parts. This late manufacture Kelsey Model P includes the l ocking bed feature not found on the earlier manufactured ... moremodels. It also includes an impression counter that is operated by the action of the press handle. The Kelsey presses are no longer in production and therefore will continue to increase in value as collectors acquire them. Information. Supplies and instruction for the use of the press can readily be found on the internet. The Press measures 24' long x 16' high x 14' wide and weighs 68 lbs with rollers and trucks installed. The press is mounted on a 16 inch square 3/4 inch thick plywood base. The Platen measures 9.00" x 6.50' The inside Chase measures 8.00' x 5.00" The auction sale includes: 1 Kelsey Model P Letterpress. With chase and associated equipment: 2 high quality rubber rollers and two additional rollers that have some damage. These are the original rollers that I bought with the press. I'm selling an old printers chase used at the print shop that I worked at in the late 60's. Early 70's. I'm not positive but I think it was used on a Kluge letterpress. The chase measures 15 and three-eights by 20 and 5-eights-outside dimensions and 13 and one eighth by 19 inside dimensions. It's in super nice condition with no rust or welds. The pictures include the manufacturer and a serial number. Please ask any questions and I'll answer them quickly and to the best of my ability. It has been previously used was tested and works well. It is one of its older models. It is a hand operated platen letterpress. It has two rollers that only lack the spun rubber that goes on them that allows you to print on the machine. Cosmetically the machine is in good working condition for its age. We cleaned it up as best we could on its metal/steel parts. Heavy duty and well built. Finding out more information on the machine simply requires utilizing the internet. Weighs almost 70 pounds before packing. The rubber rollers that need to be recovered for the press can be found online as well. This is an older model I got from the estate of a print maker who was actively using it. It has new rollers. Never been unwrapped and new trucks, never used from NA Graphics in Colorado, the best supplier for printing needs. These alone are $175.00. It comes with a chase. It has been painted recently, probably within a month before I got it. It appears to operate correctly. The ink plate rotates when the leveler is depressed and the ink disk rotates. The disk is clean with no pitting or abuse. On one side of the base there is a piece of metal running front to back. I have no idea why ... morethis is here. Which includes complete dismantling, sand blasting the entire press to bare metal, making any corrections/improvements needed, then replacing all the rod bearings with new, oil hardening steel rods, followed by refinishing with the finest sprayed and baked on enamel, then re-assembly to closer than original factory tolerances. No detail. No matter how small, has been overlooked in restoring this press to better than new. Note the nicely, hand turned aluminum part behind the platen. This part holds the platen spring in place. The original solution by Kelsey is a spring held back by a pin going through the platen shank from left to right. This is a poor, cheap, unstable way to give the platen ... morethe pressure against the platen drive so that when it returns to the rest position, it will always go back to the exact position when pressure is applied against the type and paper. Unless this whole assembly is rock solid, your work will never be high quality. Any variation or unstableness of the platen against the type and paper will produce poor or possibly blurred results. Also, if that platen and the press back it squeezes against to make an impression, are not PERFECTLY flat, it will not print evenly. The“high” spots will give a deeper impression than the“low spots” which will be lighter than the high spots. In fact, the low areas might not print at all. Totally unacceptable for high quality work. Our trucks are made of steel. Not plastic Another small detail is the dog-leg that drives the ink table. Kelsey uses a hole drilled through the rod and the dog-leg then inserts a small cheap nail like wire brad(nail) which is swaged on the ends so it doesn’t come out. It’s a cheap.
