Kelsey Excelsior Mercury Model U 5x8 Letterpress - restored & 100% print ready
My best guess on the original manufacture date of this press is post-1940's. I believe this is the most recent 5x8 model that Kelsey made. This press has been completely disassembled. All painted parts were stripped down to the metal and re-finished with 2 coats of primer then 2 coats of color and clear coat. The raised type in the castings have been accented with gold paint. All non-painted parts(pivoting rods. Ink arms, etc. were cleaned thoroughly. The fasteners in platen back and chase have been replaced with new stainless steel hex drive screws. The chase latch spring is new and also made of stainless steel. The roller hook retaining washers. Nuts and pins are all new and made of stainless steel. I fabricated new grippers and gripper bar rod for this press. The platen has been balanced to the chase bed with.050" packing under ... morethe tympan and is included with the press. The additional sheets of press packing included will allow you to change the packing under the tympan to adjust the print impression height as you change stock caliper. This is much easier than re-balancing the platen each time you change stock caliper. The press is currently packed to print on.012" stock. For example. If you wanted to print on.007" stock, you would add a sheet of.005" packing under the tympan. As with any press, the condition of your type and blocks and the uniformity of the type height will ultimately determine the quality of the printed image. The type used to print the proof card was not new. Rollers have been recovered on original journals. Trucks are original steel trucks. Rollers have only been used on this press(to verify press balance and roller& truck quality) to print the card in the photo gallery for this item. The press has been secured with stainless steel fasteners to a base made of oak which is stained& coated with a satin polyurethane. Kelsey Excelsior 5x8 Model O, Restored, Accessories, New Rollers. Last Chance!
Kelsey Excelsior Model O. Cleaned, Restored, Tested. Last Chance! I am leaving on vacation on Tuesday. July 23rd, and will not return until August 8th. I can ship on Monday, July 22nd IF you pay before 3 p.m. Central Time. OTHERWISE you will wait for shipment on or after August 8th. Bid accordingly. I understand the hesitation to buy from someone who has 1 postitive feedback only. I can state that I'm trustworthy. Am interested in providing good service, and well respond to your inquiries and concerns. I will not give this press away, though. I have another press, but don't need two. However, I'll keep it and work out the home-front issues that are created if it doesn't sell this time. It is an excellent item, with much of what you need to get started out of the box. I'll even throw in a tube of Kelsey black ink. I've ... morenot tried it, but I have had the tube open and it flows well. Should work. Give this serious consideration. This Kelsey press looked rough when I got it. But I knew it could be cleaned up and put back in operation. I stripped it and cleaned off all the rust, primed it with a high grade primer, and top-coated it in cobalt blue metallic paint from Rustoleum. These are all orginal parts. They do not show wear that will affect performance. The lettering is highlighted in silver. The ends of the steel rods are bright and shiny. The j-hooks cleaned up nicely. The springs are good, and the rollers and trucks move smoothly over the chase bed rails. It has been fully lubricated and operates smoothly. Mounted to a nice hardwood board before shipping! The ink disk does have some pitting. But I inked it up andthe new rollers printed the page you see. The platen is in excellent adjustment, and the type"kisses" the paper to leave a clean impression. You could add a bit more packing to make for a firmer impression. I've inserted into the platen a heavy card stock base. Topped with 3 sheets of packing paper and a generic paper tympan sheet. 8x5 Kelsey Excelsior model U and supplies A late model of the Kelsey Co. letterpress Found in good condition. Disassembled, cleaned, painted, tested. everything moves and adjusts easily. No brakes or welds I would recommend bolting to a board or table for long runs. other then some ink staining- disk and other flat surfaces are in great shape. Paint color is called dark metal metallic with some parts painted black. Comes with a lot of stuff; see photos. New rubber rollers with locked trucks. New Box car base. One chase. Has a counter mounted to press. A lot of different press packing. Long and sort fingers[grippers] normally removed for box car base and use foam gauge pins some included. new gripper spring. Short fingers are new also. There is a set of mixing ink. 10 colors and white if I remember. I prefer not to open to look it is double ... morerapped for ground shipment only, may have to be removed for air shipment. In any case there is no guarantee on ink making it ok only press. It is well packaged and ready to go. There will be some shipping insurance on it normally it only pays if they loose it not damage. Mercury Model 5x8 Excelsior Kelsey & Company Platen Press
Used. In good mechanical condition. No breaks, no welds. Ink table spins freely. Both roller cores need new rubber. I found it in our warehouse yesterday and got the two owners to agree to sell it. I oiled it and took the rollers off, because the rubber was dried up, so I could try it out. It operated smoothly. This morning, I heard one of the owners of our shop say that he believed that it was one of the best ones that you were going to find, whatever that meant. It looks like it hasn't been used much to me. We can't find anything missing except the rubber on the roller cores. The cores and trucks are included. It weighs about 57 lbs. This press has been completely dis-assembled and stripped down to the cast iron. All cast iron parts have been painted with 2 coats of primer. 2 coats of color and a clear coat. Mating surfaces have be masked as to allow proper contact when re-assembled. The raised type in the press castings have been detailed with gold paint. All ... morepivot rods have been thoroughly cleaned and lubricated upon re-assembly. The press is mounted to an oak base that has been stained and coated with a satin polyurethane. The mounting screws are new and made of stainless steel. There are 4 rubber feet secured with new stainless screws to the underside of the base to keep the press from walking while printing. This press has new rollers. New locking trucks and new stainless gripper bar spring. I have added an extension onto the chase bed latch as to keep the gripper latch spring from abrading the finish on the press frame. The chase bed latch spring is new and made of stainless steel. Press has been balanced and test printed using the rollers that are included with the press to print the card in the photos. There is.050 packing under the tympan and additional sheets of packing are included with the press. This will allow you to adjust the packing to compensate for different stock calipers without having to re-balance the press. The platen back adjusting screw, nut and washer are new and made of stainless steel. This is a Kelsey Mercury Excelsior 5x8 Model P printing press. It is in solid working condition and includes the chase. But it is missing some other parts. Most notable is the feed dog that turns the ink plate on each press. The hole that it goes into is open and pictured in photo#8. Also missing are the grippers, gripper spring, and the screws that go into the chase. That's all that I know is missing, but I'm not extremely familiar with these presses, so if it isn't in the photograph, then it isn't included. Kelsey Excelsior 5x8 Mercury Model P Letterpress B52F
The serial# of this press is B52F which translates into a 5x8 size press manufactured in June of 1952. This press has been completely dis-assembled and stripped down to the cast iron. All cast iron parts have been painted with 2 coats of primer. 2 coats of color and a clear coat. Mating surfaces have be masked as to allow proper contact when re-assembled. The raised type in the press castings have been detailed with gold paint. All pivot rods have been thoroughly cleaned and lubricated upon re-assembly. The press is mounted to an oak base that has been stained and coated with a satin polyurethane. The mounting screws are new and made of stainless steel. There are 4 rubber feet secured with new stainless screws to the underside of the base to keep the press from walking while printing. This press has new rollers with new locking trucks and ... morea new stainless gripper bar spring. I have added an extension onto the chase bed latch as to keep the gripper latch spring from abrading the finish on the press frame. The chase bed latch spring is new and made of stainless steel. Press has been balanced and test printed using the rollers that are included with the press to print the card in the photos. There is.050 packing under the tympan and additional sheets of packing are included with the press. This will allow you to adjust the packing to compensate for different stock calipers without having to re-balance the press. The platen back adjusting screw.
