Vintage Wilton Mechanics Swivel Bench Vise #1750 5" Jaw width Heavy Duty USA
This is a nice Wilton 1750 vise with a 5" jaw width and swivel. When I got it the jaws were in bad shape. At some point. The bolts holding the jaws on had loosened, but the user continued to use the vise which caused the bolts to break off inside the holes. I have removed all of the old, broken bolts. A new set of replacement jaws and perhaps some new paint is all that would be required to restore this to new condition. The replacement jaws and bolts are available for around $25 online. I will include aftermarket aluminum jaws. These were originally held to the vise with magnets, which have now been crushed, so they just rest on the jaw faces. The pipe jaws on this vise are slightly different than I have seen on other versions of this vise. But perhaps this is an earlier design. It seems old, probably from pre-1950s, and has a threaded metal boss that does not appear on other Starrett pin vises. Left as found, no model number, but labeled"The L.S. Starrett Co. Athol, Mass, U.S.A, suggesting an early 20th century dating. Without spike, it is 4" long. Description The Hollands Vise Co. Erie PA. is listed the the Iron Age Directory in 1904 and could have been around at the close of the 2nd Industrial revolution which was the later1800's. Long gone(50+ years) They made wonderful vises of all sizes and today the bigger ones like these are not seen often. Steel Mills were going 24/7 back in the turn of the Century, and I'm sure that why this vise with such quality exists today. Fellas. If the type of work you do is exceeding the work load of your present vise, or your in need of a solid industrial vise for welding or heavy metal work, consider back tracking into time and going with a vise made in years past that has a track record of reliability. This Hollands vise would definitely meet your needs. I wire wheeled the loose paint left, took the threaded nut assembly out, checked it for ... morecracks, and lubed it so there will be no surprises when you get it. This vise is not painted and was wiped down with Deep Creep. The handle did not meet my criteria so I replaced it. That spindle handle assy. weighs 13 Lbs. The slide, as with the rest of the vise, had numerous distress marks, non abusive, as does the jaws, all normal wear on the jaw towers and slide, displaying its past usage. The front jaw with slide weighs 51 lbs. The body, which is in good condition also, with a 4 bolt 360 swivel base weighs 91 Lbs. Guys, measure up, this Hollands is over 25" from handle nose to the back, 13" high, has a 4" throat, and its jaws are 6" wide. Coming in at about 155 lbs this vise would stand out on any bench. HEAVY DUTY VINTAGE GRINNELL BENCH VISE. 130 Lbs. 5" JAWS. The vise looks to have been hardly used if at all. The jaws are replaceable but don't look like they have ever been used, if so then hardly at all. It had some ultra light surface from sitting in a basement for so long. That is not a crack in the side towards the back. It is from the casting process where the sand mold was not smoothed there before casting. This vise was made by the Grinnell Co. of Providence, RI. They were a huge maker and installer of industrial fire sprinkler systems from the early days. They also made and installed piping for power plants. There are a lot of questions and answers about these Grinnell vises on the" practical machinist" web site. It seems like most of the surviving vises don't include the large hold down bolt and washers that ... morethis vise has. This can be shipped by UPS. EARLY C. PARKER NO. 44 SWIVEL BENCH VISE 5" JAWS. The jaws close tightly. The only thing wrong with it is shown in the last 2 pictures. Part of the end on one side of the"keeper" is broken off. This does not affect the operation of the vise at all. The"keeper" as I call it keeps the handle and screw in place when you are opening the jaws up. Since it only comes into play when opening the jaws there is no real force on it. The rest of the keeper is fine so it is only the end of one side. The vise shows signs of use, but it was generally well cared for and works smoothly. I got this vise with a mill that I purchased from a friend. His father owned a machine shop and took great care of his tools, and my mill is a testament to this. I suspect this vise was purchased with the mill sometime in the 1960's. WILTON VISE 400S MADE 5-79, 4" JAWS.
Description No question this Wilton 400S has been used and by looking at the base. Its environment also came into play more then the actual vise usage. This vise was not sitting in water, it was near a corrosive element like Salt or Fertilizer that made the base and lower end of this vise appear that way. It in to way compromises the structural makeup of this vise. The one photo of the underneath shows the base is untouched. This vise was previously painted. I stripped it clean, removed the jaws without any problems lubed the spindle and repained it. The rest of the exterior of this vise shows normal wear on the anvil, channel bar and dispite the ding on the side(photo) everything else is good. New finger savers, new collar, new swivel handles, the jaws are original to the vise and in nice condition. This vise swivels properly and locks down ... morenormally. The spindle handle is very nice along with the 2 new swivel handles. Operation is smooth and easy. Guys, with proper care, this Wilton Bullet will service you for many years to come. Ridgid Pipe Vise No. 21 + Tube Cutter No. 10
Up for sale are 2 pipe tools made by Ridgid in the USA. Both are used but in good working order. They aren't pretty but they will do the same job as brand new tools. The tube cutter was purchased new by me and has been used very little. The cutting wheel is in nearly new condition. The handle turns the screw without slop or binding. I received the vise in-trade. It looked like this when I got it and I have never used it. The screw turns freely from top to bottom without binding. I cleaned it up a little and oiled the moving parts. Be careful when unpacking.
