Vintage Desmond Stephan Bench Vise This vise is in good working order. It opens and closes smoothly with an easy turn of the wooden handle. It opens to a width of approximately 6 1/2 inches. The plates measure 6 by 4 1/2 inches and the handle is 11 inches long. It is being sold in"as found" condition meaning I have done no cleaning of the item and it is a bit greasy. Photos are accurate as to its condition. The bit of rust on the screw does not affect its operation. Great vintage piece for restoration or use as is. It is a heavy metal item. Weighing approximately 11 pounds. The wooden handle will be removed for shipping so that it will fit in a USPS large flat rate box. It is easily reattached as one of the knobs screws off. I am not an expert on this type of item. Desmond Stephan Simplex 43P Vise - 4.75" Jaws - Parker Collar Style Vice
Up for sale is a Desmond Stephan Simplex 43P vise. 4.75" wide jaws. 7.25" opening, 55 lbs, stationary base. It's a good solid old vise. There's about 1/2 turn of slack between tightening& loosening when you swing the handle. It's mostly due to the front collar design, there is also a little slack in the threads. I shimmed the mainscrew nut with a very thin piece of aluminum so it is in there good and tight. I didn't have a thin enough washer to put on the mainscrew face, if you find one you can probably get a little more slack out of it. I honestly think it is fine as-is, I have two other vises with the same design and they have the same amount of slack. You can see from the pics it's date stampped 1-40(January 1940) Made right at the beginning of World War II. The 21 I'm guess is a production number ... moreso they can keep the same parts worked together. The front Parker-style collar came to me broken. The previous owner admitting to me they were pounding on the handle with a hammer to try and get the slide open(it was seized) Took a week or so of letting Kroil soak on the slide to get it free. Obviously the front collar isn't designed for any force, it's just to hold the mainscrew in place as your open the vise. After blasting the parts clean I used some JB Weld to bond the two broken parts together. After that cured I drilled& tapped two holes on top and used a couple screws with red loctitie to hold everything together just to be super sure. Check the pictures for a couple close-ups so you can see what I'm talking about. I had some extra JB Weld mixed up from the collar repair so I figured I would fill in a little wear on the top front of the dynamic jaw. I think they must of used a torch a bunch. It looked like it was just eroded way right in the middle. The static jaw wasn't as bad so I left it as-is. It was completely disassembled and blasted to bare metal. I used the Rustoleum Hammered Green(I think) And lettered with a gloss black oil-based sharpie. Sinc

This is a Beautiful Vintage Desmond Stephan Simplex S wivel Bench Vise. It's a model# 31S- Steel Slide- with 3 1/4" Jaws. The Vise was a Wood Craftsman's Shop(Barn) Find in Original Condition. Made in the U S A/ The Desmond Stephan MFG CO/ Urbana Ohio. The company is still in business but sold off it's vise business back in 1964. The Model 31 S(S for Swivel Base) was first produced in 1929 with claims of being a better vise due to the strength of it's Solid Steel Slide. The slide was cast of solid steel and then milled out for the vise screw. The remaining gray color on the vise indicates it is the Professional Machinist Model. The home model was painted red. Measures 12" Long(closed) x 7 3/4" Wide(at it's widest point of the base) x 6 3/4" High. W eighs 24 lbs. All I had to do to this one was clean off a little rust and polish the handles. Then squirt it with some fresh paint! As you can see in the pictures the jaws only have some minor scratches, otherwise they look unused. This is a rare find. The vise is a quality vintage MADE IN AMERICA gem. It was manufactured by the Desmond Stephan Mfg. Co. of Urbana, Ohio. They are still in business today but have long since discontinued the manufacturing of vises. I would guess this vise to date somewhere between the 1940's and 1964, when Desmond Stephan stopped making vises. It has been lubricated and it's ready to be put to work. Vintage Desmond Stephan Simplex 41FS Vise
Vintage Simplex 41FS vise in excellent condition. It has been completely torn down. Degreased, and stripped of old paint. It was then refinished in a black hammertone finish with silver highlighted letters. The vise was then lightly greased and reassembled. It now works as good as new.
