This was a model made by Wilton. Even though the Wilton label has long since worn off. This item is used, but functions properly. It has some normal use wear, mostly on the top areas of the vise grips(see Pictures) I am not sure how old it is. It belonged to my father. It could use a little cleaning as it has sat on my father's workbench for many many years. The vise is very heavy, weighing about 45 pounds on my scale(my scale has been wrong before, so give or take a couple pounds) The vise jaws open up to about 6 inches(see Picture#10) and the jaws themselves are about 5 inches wide. WILTON TOOL CORP VISE No3 Bullet Bench 3" Jaws Chicago, ILL
This is a WILTON"TOOL CORP" so you know it's old! Bullet Bench(Machinist) Vise with 3" actually closer to 2.75" Jaws, made at the Chicago, ILL USA plant, so it could be late 1940's. There is a small tweak to the vise that does not allow the jaws to come together perfectly. It could be I assembled the jaws opposite? Not sure. But I used all the original fasteners. The vise is also missing the end dust cap and has no swivel base. The previous owner did some grinding/filing on the key itself, so I have no solid date to offer you. Just a few words of how I refurbished the vise. Gave it a bath in solvent. Then very hot water. Dried it with compressed air. Then, glass beaded every piece of it right down to bare metal. Polished up the bare machined surfaces. And taped them off. Shot the casting with Rustolium Hammered ... moreLight Blue. Greased all moving parts. And removing the excess lube. I have for auction this vintage Wilton pattern makers multi use under mount bench vise the elongated/ pattern jaws measure 4' wide and the other. Wood working jaws measures 7' wide. The vise opens up comfortably 8 1/4' the vise is in good + used condition. It is as found right out of an estate of a woodworker. It is in need of a good cleaning. There is nothing broken or repaired. There is some wear to the top of the carpenter jaws, The pattern jaws are slightly out of alignment. the wood spacer plates are glued to the vise. CHICAGO.It is 11 1/2 inches long when closed and the base is 5 1/2 inches.3 inch jaws.1 1/2 inch anvil spot.2 bolts allow the unit head to swivel.weight is about 21 pounds. I think this was made prior to 1941.Steel and Made in USA.This vise has been lightly refurbished by Uncle Wes.very close to the same color.the operation is very smooth.please NOTE: one of the pins in a jaw shoe is missing as shown in the picture. Wilton 9400 Bullet Vise 4" Jaws - Excellent USA Made Tool
Wilton 9400 Machinist's vise with swivel base. A very heavy duty 100% MADE IN USA tool. Well cared for and in great condition. It has been cleaned& freshly lubed. Movable jaw slides freely and handle can be rotated with one finger. Jaws are in good condition(pictures shown) and close evenly. Four inch wide jaws. 52 lbs of well designed functional cast iron American made tool. 12-31-62 stamped on the movable jaw key- I believe this means it was made in 1962. The fact that it still has the majority of the original Wilton"5 Year Guarantee" sticker on it shows you how much it has been used in the past 52 years. The hardware& base locking knobs are bright and I personally enjoyed the patina of the original paint and the remnants of the original Guarantee sticker- if you wanted to media blast and re-paint it would be a simple ... morejob to restore it to as manufactured condition. This vise was made in the US in an era when tools were made to last. I hope this vise goes to someone who will enjoy it as much as I have in decades to come.
