It is furnished with a take-up block that slips on the end of the screw. The block is held to allow a slight swivel action that conforms the angle of the block to the shape of the work being held. It seems old, probably from pre-1950s, and has a threaded metal boss that does not appear on other Starrett pin vises. Left as found, no model number, but labeled"The L.S. Starrett Co. Athol, Mass, U.S.A, suggesting an early 20th century dating. Without spike, it is 4" long. Capacity is from 1/8-3/16" Included is a threaded metal spike and we have no idea how this tool was used(possibly to stake vampires? If anyone knows how this was used, we'd love to know! Starrett 160 clamps can be used in layout work or to hold the work securely for drilling. Milling, grinding etc. the clamp comes with 2 removable take-up blocks that slip on the end of the screw. Selling this vintage machinist precision vise. It is in pretty good shape with minimal tarnish. There are two scrapes on the top of the vice and don't effect its operation. There is no makers mark on the tool. But it was purchased at an estate sale of a former machinist that had owned many Starrett made tools. The former owners name has been imprinted on the sides and bottom. The dimensions of the vice are 6 1/4 x 1 15/16 x 1 15/16. It weights a few pounds. But it will still clamp your work! The stock 3.5" jaws look like they are welded to the cast and do not come off. Just a few words of how I refurbished the vise. Gave it a bath in solvent. Then very hot water. Dried it with compressed air. Then, glass beaded every piece of it right down to bare metal. Polished up the bare machined surfaces. And taped them off. Shot the casting with red& cream paint. Greased all moving parts. And removing the excess lube. Did it- so you don't have to. This vise will most likely be around for your grandkids! Starrett Co. but its still a Starrett product and has all the quality you would expect. Condition = Excellent. This vice is intended to mount up-to the face of your work-bench which allows one to have plenty of working room above. Around, and underneath. Will be shipped on the wooden base as shown in the photo. Makes it safe to ship and the buyer can just screw it to their work bench(or stump) No defects. Nice patina throughout; i.e. It’s used, but it looks super] The jaws open& close smoothly. Jaw faces are 3.75 x 1.25 inches. Maximum opening = 7 inches. Throat depth = 3.75 inches. Overall length = Measures 16.5 inches. Weighs 47 pounds. Pipe jaws: two on the stationary ... moreside and one missing from the movable side. The pipe jaws are removable with set screws. Mounted on plywood(17.5 x 9.5 inches) for display and shipping. I painted the lettering with some RED acrylic hobby paint. History: The company was founded when businessman and inventor Laroy Sunderland Starrett(1836–1922) Who was born in Maine, bought the Athol Machine Company in 1905.
