Cable Continuity Tester, Pin Identifier
I manufactured this myself for a business I was starting a few years ago which never got off the ground. I am selling my test equipment to hopefully someone that can use it. I made this myself to test cables that were either manufactured and required a quick test. Or I had to reverse engineer a cable/harness. It's a very simple circuit which is really a diode/LED, resistor, and a power supply. If you look at the unit from the front and draw a line to split it in half. All the connectors on the P1 side are wired from power, through the switch and then to the corresponding pin in each connector. The P2 side is the LED, resistor and then to ground. Therefore. When you plug any cable on the P1 side and the other end of the cable to the P2 side, you complete the circuit, and by simply turning each switch on one at a time, you can tell how ... moreit terminates on the other end because the LED will light for the corresponding pin in the connector. The example I showed above shows switches 1-4 are on and LED's 1,2,5,6 are on. In actual fact, if you do this one switch at a time, you would see pin 1 is connected to pin 2 at the other end, pin 2 to pin 1, pin 3 to pin 5 and pin 4 to pin 6. All the pins are wired consistently on each side. Meaning that all the pin 1's connect together, all the pin 2's connect together and so on. The interesting thing is that you can adapt any connector type to work by simply making a mini adapter that plugs into an existing connector on the board. I have included some as shown. These are to test High Density DB15 cables. Like on a monitor for example, that use a standard DB15 at the opposing end that connects on the board. You can literally use this to test any cable up to 50 pins. The banana plugs at the top can be used as a continuity tester that illuminates the LED between them when shorted. Standard VOLT/OHM Meter test cords work best. Connectors on the panel are as follows. DB9, DB15, DB25, DB37, Amphenol 157(50 pin) V35, Male/Female of each) and of course RJ11 and RJ45. I hope
