Each blocks ridges are of decreasing width in order of visibility. Ridges are not visible unless phase contrast is used( I also found they can be viewed in Nomarksi DIC) For proper setup blocks up to 3 should be fully visible. Blocks 4 and 5 at least partially, and 6 and 7 invisible at 500x magnification. On my Zeiss photomic III with 40x Ph2 Neofluar I took the images of the different bands using the phase contrast condenser and green light as shown in image. Please don't ask me to explain more about what it is or how it works because my knowledge of microscopy is rudimentary at best.
