The slot and screw serve to hold the barrel fixed while the upper portion is twisted to achieve focus. It's quite handy to help get a camera on the trinocular head par-focal with the eyepieces. Focus on the specimen using the camera. Then use the right-H eyepiece to match focus. After the right eyepiece is focused you can then focus the left eyepiece in the normal manner and all will be par-focal. If you plan on using live view, or the camera mount itself can be focused, it really isn't necessary, but it's nice anyway.
