It is a specially modified Leitz Orthoplan brightfield/ darkfield illuminator that has been provisioned with a Nomarski interference contrast slider and swing-in polarizer. The huge advantage of this illuminator over the conventional Leitz vertical illuminators is that it permits the use of BF. DF, Pol, and interference contrast in a single illuminator. What is more, you don’t have to have separate dedicated objectives for darkfield and ICR– with the normal Leitz system, the Wollaston prisms had to be attached to special short-mount RMS-threaded objectives. The darkfield objectives could not be used with the Wollaston prisms. If both techniques were required at a particular magnification, one had to‘double-up’ installing two objectives of ... morethe same magnification on a single nosepiece. This illuminator was modified by extending the position of the revolving nosepiece a bit further away from the tube lens and reflector using a spacer block. Within the spacer is a slot which accepts a slider that contains the Wollaston prism. The slider has a‘stop’ position when the prism is in the‘active’ position. Furthermore. The lateral position of the prism may be adjusted by a knurled handle whereby the contrast can be set. The prism has been selected for suitable use with the Plan series of darkfield(30mm thread size) objectives, and will also work with the Plan 8x brightfield if it is installed in the RMS thread position of the nosepiece. The NPL Fluotar series of objectives(RMS thread) are probably not so suitable since the prism is at the wrong height. A good selection would included the PL 8x, PL16x-D, PL32x-D, and the PL80x-D. I believe it should also work with the brightfield PL160x/0.95. When it is desired to work with either brightfield or darkfield modes of illumination. All that is required is to flip the polarizer out of the light path and to withdraw the Wollaston prism slider until it is no longer in the

The objectives are all marked in red interf.Kontrast T Objective set NPL(P) 25x/0.50 with internal Wollaston prism aligned. NPL(P) 40x/0.65 with internal Wollaston prism aligned, NPL(P) 100x/1.30 Oil with internal Wollaston prism aligned. Correct matching quintuple nosepiece 1.25x with two factory slotted dust caps. Phase#1 objectives include the 10x and 16x PHACOs plus the LWD 20, 25 or 32x. The condenser is clean and it is the prefered model with prepolarizer that eliminates possible damage to the rotating polarizer from high intensity halogen lamps at full power. Leitz Orthoplan 2 Aristoplan Trinocular Microscope Head Part #512 818
Up for auction is a non-working trinocular microscope head from a Leitz Orthoplan 2 or Aristoplan microscope. Please note: this scope is labeled as an Orthoplan 2. As seen in the last three photos, but has the appearance of an Aristoplan. I believe the parts fit the newer Aristoplan models rather than older Orothoplan models. I am not 100% certain on this, so please check your needs carefully. The part number on this head is#512 818. The intraocular adjustment is not working on this item.when you turn the knob it just spins and does not move the eyepiece holders. I believe the gears are stripped inside from trying to move the knob when it was gummed up and frozen in place, or the knob itself is broken. As such, this item is being sold as is.that is, in non-working condition for parts or repair. Other information about this microscope head: The optics appear clear although there is some light dust inside. I see no signs of delamination or scratches. This Microscope frames can be configured for transmitted or incident light applications. It comes with field diaphragms for transmitted and reflected light and focusing block. The mechanical heart of the Orthoplan microscope is the focusing block that was built so well and to such tight tolerances. It was used on at least two space shuttle missions for some particularly delicate work. It is equipped with a coaxial dual coarse and fine adjustment on ball bearings with a displacement accuracy of 0.001mm. Backlash and lubrication requirements have been completely eliminated; one division on the drum scale of the fine adjustment is equal to 1μm movement of the stage.
