Not sure of the vintage, but this one looks at least 20 years old. Unit has been recently tested and faithfully delivers Zero to 135VAC on it’s standard two prong outlet with 117 VAC on the primary. Information plate on front of unit indicates a Max KVA 1, and 7 ½ Amp. Large upper control knob turns smoothly without binding, voltage rises gently without intermittent drop-outs or surges, and voltage output is consistent with calibration marks. Cosmetics are not the greatest with some blue paint chipped off the housing, but you’re probably not shopping for cosmetics when you need a good variac. I've tested this one and it works fine. The cord does have a cut in one part(see photo) But that does not prevent this item from working. However, if you're going to be using this a lot, you may want to at least put some electrical tape over that spot. Please note that this model 500B does not accommodate three-pronged plugs, only two-pronged. High quality USA made Superior Powerstat F226 variable transformer. Very conservatively rated for continuous operation at 50C/ 122F. Intermittent operation. Lower ambient or ventilation will tend to allow higher loads. For example. Their curves show that it will handle 3.5x rated current for one minute. Can be connected for CW or CCW rotation. And the rotor can be reversed allowing the knob to extend from the base for panel mounting. Terminals with 1/4" tabs and screws are connected as shown. Screw only terminals 6-3. 7 NC. Terminal box has standard 1/2" D punch for fuse holder on right and 7/8" knockout holes left and bottom. Fuse holder is not present. The unfused version had terminals 6 and 7 connected to allow 0-240/280 from a 120 line. The F version left them unconnected.
