MADE IN ENGLAND BY COOKE TROUGHTON& SIMMS Ltd. A VERY DESIRABLE COLLECTIBLE ANTIQUE THEODOLITE ESTIMATED TO BE NEARLY 90 YEARS OLD. AN EXQUISITE SURVEYORS' INSTRUMENT THAT WILL BE A FINE ADDITION TO ANY COLLECTION. THE BUBBLE LEVELS ARE INTACT AND MOST CONTROLS/ADJUSTERS APPEAR TO BE FUNCTIONAL. SOME COMPONENTS HAVE BEEN REPLACED. Engraving on base reads: Made in England for Hughes Owens Ltd. This fine old instrument is nearly intact. Cooke, Troughton & Simms, piece of technical apparatus
This is a quirky piece of equipment. I have selected the classification merely because it seems to be a logical option bearing in mind that it looks like some sort of scope or sighting mechanism. It is very well made and very heavy- in excess of 5kg. The marks impressed on the body of the item are No. E088. Cooke, Troughton& Simms, York, England There are two eye pieces on what I call the top of the device. The body is made to open out on a helical screw system but clearly fits onto something else. Looking through the larger eye piece the image appears to be a ground glass screen with finely detailed triangular and rectangular outlines. Looking through the smaller eyepiece the image looks like a small rectangular box with a number of figures and an indicator that looks like a vernier or rangefinder scale. My Father collected a wide variety of Microscopes all of his life. Now nearing 90 and rather frail he has decided to sell off his collection. I will be listing over 20 microscopes during the next few weeks so bookmark my sales. All of his microscopes are in working order but have been stored in a dry smoke free sparer room for many, many, years and so are a little dusty, but unless otherwise mentioned are in very fine condition indeed. THIS ONE IS: A monocular microscope by C.T.S( Cooke. Houghton& Sims) Serial number 1637. It comes with 3 x original CTS objectives x 10 x 40 And one Oil immersion lens. These are currently mounted on the scope as shown. And their respective black metal cases empty(Shown with rack) Also 2 eyepieces(x6 and x10) A focusing condenser Original Magnification Chart. Original Mahogany case. With fully operational ... morelock and key. The microscope and lenses in extremely fine condition indeed. Need a general dust clean of course. The case is in very good condition as well but some wear and surface scratching. Would benefit from rub down and re varnish if required but perfectly acceptable as is. Vintage THEODOLITE By Cooke Troughton& Simms Ltd York This Theodolite is Serial No. VO13868 Age unknown but presumed to be mid 20th Century The theodolite is made mainly of brass finished in grey enamel. The scales are silvered and the adjustment knobs are plated. All contained in a fitted Mahogany case. Also in the case is a lens hood. Brush, oil bottle, spanner& plumbob. Provided but not shown is a lens cap and leather strap, there are a few small holes for equiment not present. The optics are a bit hazy. For auction. Vintage Tavistock Theodolite, or sometimes called Transit or sometimes searched under Cooke Troughton& Simms. No Box. I don’t know the exact manufacture date, but from what I’ve read on the internet this Tavistock was introduced in 1937 and it was a huge technological advancement in surveying with its design. I can hand deilver if your close to my area. This Tavistock is used, and has some paint chips, however the scope and bubbles are intact and working, cross hairs are intact, no broken glass anywhere. The unique viewing scopes for reading the verniers are also intact. All the mirrors for reflecting the light thru the unique glass verniers are also working ... moreand will reflect the light as it should. Measuerments are 11” tall, scope is 7-3/4” long. All adjustment dials work like they should. I tried to take pictures of the verniers thru the viewing scopes, but its hard to do. I’ve acquired an original Tavistock booklet for this theodolite showing the use and specs. and how to read the glass verniers which is included. This will also include a couple of other booklets showing the use of this theodolite and another booklet of Cooke Troughton& Simms called the Optical Micrometer Theodolite No III. I did see something on the internet that said it possibly made in the early 1900’s. If anybody has any good info on dates of manufacture, I would love to hear from you. This one has 8 different tools, accessories or attachments for the transit mounted inside the box, including the original unusual shaped plumb bob. The original wood box measures 14-1/2” x 7-1/2” x 7-1/2” Scope measures 8” long. All magnifying glass’s for the verniers are intact, they might need some cleaning. The cross hairs are intact and visible along with the only leveling bubble. There is no broken glass on this. Hi.I have for sale a good clean Cooke,Troughton& Simms Binoclular microscope that comes complete with four objective lenses and a lockable wooden carry case.This microscope dates to around the 1950's and has a good heavy body with all of its adjusters working perfectly fine.The optics are fine with two of the objectives but the other two have been tampered with.It looks like someone has tried to clean two of the objectives and have not put back the little lenses back in the correct order.The little lenses all look present and you will need a little patients with them.I think the working objectives are 10x and 95x.The ones that have been tampered with are 45x and 40x(the 40x end cap is not screwed back fully.The rest of the microscope is fine and the stage adjuster works great.this also has a convex/flat mirror and light diaphragm ... moreetc at the base.The stereo view is fine with no double vision etc and i am sure this will be a fabulous microscope again.The wooden carry case is fine and has two keys. York England and probably used mid-century sometime by a doctor. The instrument number is M.153963. It has 4 objectives- 100x. 40x, 10x and 5x. The eye pieces are Complan 10x. The turret and focus knobs work freely and the light source works. Included is a hemacytometer in original box along with some paper and glass lenses. Normal paint loss due to use. Brass parts& knobs have lacquer loss. 3 point leveling base with mounting wing nut. Telescope optics in ex cond. No notable cleaning marks. Eye lens good w working swing in filters. Reticle is crisp and clear. Optical viewers on left and right appear OK with working filters. But are untested. Left eye cup is dented. All locking and fine adjustment knobs work fine. Electric light assembly untested. Bubble level near top is broken. Piece will need fine cleaning. Lubrication and adjustments for best results. Up for auction is this antique 6" proportional dividers in their original fitted wooded case(which I think is Mahogany) The instrument appears to be made of brass with nickel or steel points& threaded post for the locking nut. The maker is Cooke Troughton& Simms. Ltd. London, York& Capetown, as marked on the instrument. The same side is marked"Lines" and"Circles" The other side is marked"Plans" It works well, and is in remarkably good condition. The cosmetic condition is spoiled a bit with the etched initials of a previous owner, though that is not uncommon. Otherwise, the instrument has a number of very faint and very small micro-rubs/scratches that are very inconspicuous. The wooden case is in comparable condition, with a few small, but noticeable dents and scratches. Regardless, a beautiful ... morepiece of engineering history. A refracting telescope of a regulation type used by officers in the Royal Navy for making observations from the deck of a ship. This type of telescope has a single draw tube and the barrel clad in leather This piece was used in the Boer war onboard the Drayton Grange. As the story goes it was given to a young Ivy Somerville by an officer from the ship with the promise he would return after the war.
