But I have never seen one quite like this. I am not sure how old it is, but I would consider it vintage. There is no model number present. It is in fair overall physical condition. With a few small scuffs and marks here and there. The optics look to be in fair condition, with no cracks. However, there are some dust particles present in the eyepieces. I've shown a close up in the photographs. The paint is rubbed off in places and some rust has formed on the body from age. All of the parts move smoothly. In those heydays of American manufacturing prowess and genius. Things were built to last-and here is a prime example. Anyone would be proud to own this microscope.the quality of the engineering is truly phenomenal. The horizontal and vertical boom arms are machined from solid steel(not cheap aluminum as in later-day boom stand microscopes) There are three-count'em-heavy duty rack and pinion mechanisms controlling the operations of the microscope. The focusing knobs on the microscope head are chrome. Polished to a mirror-like finish(in later years, the knobs were brushed steel, and even later, much cheaper plastic) The eyepieces are 12X wide field. I have an AO Spencer Stereo Microscope which I believe is called a Cycloptic. I believe it is an"M" Series. It has an apochromatic common objective and comes with a pair of 15X W.F. eyepieces which give 5 power options- 10. 15, 20, 30, and 40 through the Magni-Changer lens system which has internal pairs of lenses or"telescopes" The scope is said to be parfocal, but small adjustments are needed for each power setting. Included is a removable Transilluminating Substage Base without the mirror that is held on by 2 screws at the back. And it comes with a Starlite Illuminator, model 651 with adjustable brightness settings. This is missing the flexible arm, bulb housing, and condenser unit. When plugged in the orange light on the front of the box lights up, but the illuminating bulb does not. The scope is also missing a circular ... moreplate for the stage. Cosmetically the scope shows some wear to the grey paint. The main problem is the 2 images don't align properly so they have to be re-aligned. Other than that all the optics look excellent. This is a nice american optical AO Spencer microstar microscope. I believe it is a series 20. But examine the pictures to judge yourself. It has the binocular head. It is missing the eye pieces and 3 of the objectives, it comes with one 10x objective. The part of the mechanical stage the holds the slide is also missing(the stage itself moves fine) It has the fancy illuminator with multiple filter holders as well as the condenser. You will also need the power supply for this(model 2051) Other than the missing items, a couple inventory tags, and some labeling it is in good shape. I was going to restore it but haven't gotten around to it so it must go. Sold as-is for parts or repair only. Vintage Black AO Model 27 Stereomicroscope with Dual Rack and Pinion Focusing and Protective Glass Slide The American Optical(AO) Company and the C. A. Spencer& Sons Company started as independent entities. AO began in 1833 as an eyeglasses manufacturer in Southbridge. Massachusetts. Charles A. Spencer began in the late 1930s as. Perhaps, the earliest successful American microscope manufacturer. Working initially out of Canastota, New York and after a number of moves out of Buffalo. New York. New York State was also the home of the Bausch and Lomb Optical Company. In 1935. AO bought the Spencer Lens Company, and after this purchase. Many of their microscopes carried the AO Spencer designation, eventually changing to simply AO. Listed here is a Model 27. It has a fixed magnification with 10x AO eyepieces. The clips under the objective ... morehold a protective glass cover. Present here but often missing. The protective glass is chipped in one corner, see the photographs. The protective glass holder and some screws show some signs of rust. The clips are to hold the optional protective glass. They are not for holding slides, as they move with the focusing adjustment mechanism. Thus, they can be removed without any compromise in stereomicroscope functionality. However, they do provide historical context, and probably should be kept if this microscope is purchased for its important historical significance as well as its function. Condition of the instrument is perhaps somewhat better than its age might suggest. This stereomicroscope has two independent rack and pinion focusing mechanisms to allow for a significant height variation above the object under examination. It can be tilted anywhere between approximately 0– 90 degrees(see photographs) Thereby, allowing significant flexibility in the objects to be examined. This flexibility is also aided by the lack of a formal stage, the microscope opting instead for a solid base allowing it to be used in a variety of positions with a myriad of objects. The stereomicroscope includes two built-in lamps to use with either transmitted(transparent specimens) or incident illumination for opaque objects.
