ZEISS ca 1938 LARGE FRAME BITUKNI BINOCULAR MICROSCOPE
The item on offer is a large frame Zeiss microscope with Bitukni binocular head. The serial number is 282257. Which dates the instrument to 1938. This microscope resembles closely the UGC model illustrated in the 1937 Zeiss catalog(see photo) but the fine focus is located high on the limb rather than low near the base and a knowledgeable eBay correspondent has informed me that it is more likely an E stand. That correspondent also notes that the large integrated mechanical stage is a post-war Zeiss(West Germany) product, making the instrument a very interesting hybrid. The optical components of the microscope consist of a pair of Zeiss 10X oculars, three Zeiss objectives(8X, NA 0.25; 20X NA 0.65; and 90X HI NA 1.30) and a 4X, NA 0.10 Lumiscope(Japan) searcher objective. The NA of the 20X objective is larger than the NA = 0.4- 0.5 that is typical ... moreof most other 20X objectives. The objective changer is fitted to the optical tube with a dovetail slide. The binocular head(serial# 9915) rotates and has both diopter and inter-pupilary adjustments. The condenser(NA 1.2) is on a rack and pinion mount and has a smoothly working iris diaphragm. The substage mirror is missing, but can be easily replaced. The coaxial xy controls of the mechanical stage are smooth, as are the coarse focus and fine focus motions. Examination of the objectives with a hand lens reveals no obvious defects. The cosmetic appearance of the microscope is very good, with retention of the gloss to the black finish. The microscope has not been tested and is sold as is. The case for the microscope is in good mechanical condition but lacks the key for the lock. This is an excellent condition Zeiss Inclined Binocular Pol Tube with dual focusing eyepiece diopter tubes and notched viewing tubes for insertion of crossline oculars. Optically the tube is clean and clear with no blemishes or delamination. Cosmetically the tube is also in outstanding condition showing very minor use. The dovetail mounting ring is notched on both sides for precise alignment of the head on the Zeiss stand. This head is used and fits not only the smaller laboratory pol microscope stands such as the Standard and WL. But the larger Universal and Photomicroscope stands as well.
