The item on offer is a Leitz monocular microscope; the serial number is 538913. I believe this microscope was likely manufactured about 1960. The all Leitz optical components consist of a Periplan GF 10X ocular and four objectives: 3.5X NA 0.10. 10X NA 0.25, 45X NA 0.65, and an oil immersion 100X NA 1.30. The condenser is on a rack and pinion focusing mount; it has a swing out filter tray. The iris diaphragm of the condenser works smoothly. The microscope comes with a functioning(see photos) Leitz substage lamp that fits a pin socket in the base; it is powered by a conventional 110 V source. The microscope is fitted with a mechanical stage. The fine and coarse focus motions are smooth, as are the mechanical stage motions. Examination of the objectives with a hand lens reveals no obvious defects. The cosmetic appearance of the microscope is ... morevery good, noting some nicks to the enamel finish. Vintage Unitron Monocular Polarizing Microscope
This microscope was owned by Louis Vitullo. I came in to possession of this item after helping his daughter. A close friend of mine, clear out his belongings from his home. This was Lou's personal microscope he kept in his home. Lou was a Chicago police sergeant and later became chief microanalyst at the city's crime lab. He is best known as the first person to standardize evidence collection in cases of sexual assault. Which until then was not done in a systematic fashion. The resulting evidence kits were initially called Vitullo kits and continued to be known as such even after his name was officially removed from them. They are now more commonly known as sexual assault evidence kits(SAEK) or rape kits for short.
