The suffix“M” denotes“mineralogical“ It has a cast and machined steel frame.Painted black, in excellent condition. Many other parts are lacquered brass. The lacquer is well preserved, but notperfect. Coarse rack-and-pinion, and fine focus work easily, smoothly, and evenly,as does the rack-and-pinion motion for the condenser. The catalog describesthis particular condenser apparatus as“Simple Illumination Apparatus c” employingthree lenses, with the top lens(N.A. 1.0) in a“swing-out“ arrangement” andthe catalog also lists an attachable diaphragm at extra cost– this microscopehas the“c apparatus” as there shown, but does not have the then optionaldiaphragm. The Polarizer and the Analyzer are of substantial ... moresize- they areprisms made of optically clear calcite, and they are still clear. I see no black lines in the calcite(as one sooften does with vintage calcite prisms) Cross’d, they really give extinctionwell! Optically clear calcite(Iceland Spar) isscarce, and very expensive now- polarizing microscopes made much more recentlyuse either Polaroid filters or have to charge huge four digit prices forcalcite prisms. The serial number dates it at1924. As does the Leitz paper card in the door of the cabinet- however, theserial number of the instrument is 220792, while that on the top of the cabinetdoor, and on the door card, is 225414- this is probably because a school boughtseveral of these for class use, and people did not always put each microscopeback in its exact original cabinet. CARL ZEISS or JENA POLARIZING INTERMEDIATE TUBE MICROSCOPE POL FILTER - RARE!!
This is a polarizing intermediate tube off an early Carl Zeiss polarizing microscope. The oriented polarizing filter is in great shape. As are the rest of the optics. There is a Bertrand lens, and a slot for a standard sized secondary wave plate. There is no hazing or fungal growth whatsoever, and the lenses are crystal clear. I have disassembled this and greased the slides, it just needs to be reinstalled on a microscope and it will work perfectly. This is an extremely hard to find piece, they don't come up often. This particular one will fit a great variety of models of microscope(i even successfully used one on an Olympus Vanox!

Slide in bertrand lens(focus is not working) Slide in pin hole. The small black knobs that you see are not securely mouted and slip off if pulled. It will need some work and cleaning. This microscope was owned by Louis Vitullo. I came in to possession of this item after helping his daughter. A close friend of mine, clear out his belongings from his home. This was Lou's personal microscope he kept in his home. Lou was a Chicago police sergeant and later became chief microanalyst at the city's crime lab. He is best known as the first person to standardize evidence collection in cases of sexual assault. Which until then was not done in a systematic fashion. The resulting evidence kits were initially called Vitullo kits and continued to be known as such even after his name was officially removed from them. They are now more commonly known as sexual assault evidence kits(SAEK) or rape kits for short.

Images are not affected by these blemishes and one cannot tell that they are there when viewing through the eyepiece. The eyepiece has a cross hair reticle with a 10mm scale accross it devided into 50 parts. There is a small amount of dust on the reticle. The eyepiece has a 3mm centering tab on the side.
