Sears electric portable typewriter with plastic case and fabric cover
You are bidding on a Sears portable electric typewriter that dates to the mid-80's. The paper support folds into the top of the carriage. It features a correction and stencil switch. Power shift and return keys, and a quiet motor. It's remarkably clean given its age. This typewriter comes complete with a hard plastic carrying case featuring two locks, a fabric cover for when the typewriter is left on the desk, the complete owners' manual, and a correction/inked ribbon which still works. It powers on and the keys work great. The only bad side is the carriage does not move- not when typing, not when return is pressed. It will need either some lubrication or fixed. I did not see any carriage lock on the device, and if the carriage move button is pressed, it will reset. Since the carriage does not move, that's why I'm selling ... morethis for so little. All keys type and the ink white/black ribbon spool in machine. Ink ribbon is fading. Only way it has been tested is by doing the test type paper as seen in last photo. Cleaned outside well and blew out inside with spray cleaning air. Some ink stains are on the turn paper reel. When power return button is pushed, the power cartridge slide return goes a little slowly back to the left to the starting point. Slides nice and smooth when done manually. Overall clean and a good machine. This is a great typewriter for a collection item or to use. It could work even better with proper care cleaning to work at it's best. I purchased this typewriter new. From Sears, in the early 1980s, and didn't use it much, about six times. Since my first computer acquisition in the late 1980s I've used it only twice. It's in excellent condition and still functions like new. It comes with the original manual, a protective cover, and and handy folding carry handle. The power cord stores away in the wrap at the rear. This machine was made by Smith Corona, and is exactly the same as their H Series. All parts and supplies are the same as the Sears marked. It uses both a print cassette and a correcting cassette; both of which are available online. It has many features. So many, in fact, too many to mention. For instance, you can write an entire page, hit one button, and it will type the entire page automatically, much like a word processor. My apologies! I listed this previously. And I got some photos of my slightly later-model Sears Celebrity mixed in. I THINK I got them all weeded out now. Sears carried many brands of typewriters until the 1950s or 1960s. When they starting selling many models of"Tower" then"Sears" re-branded and sometimes slightly re-designed Smith Corona models. As with their cameras, eventually they had products made for them by other manufacturers as well. This 1968 model was made by Smith Corona. An has pretty much all the features you could find on a portable typewriter. Easy to set margins, tabs set and released by push-button, a changeable key(1 and! on this one) This model has electric-action for the keystrokes only. Other functions. Such as paper advance, and carriage return, are handled manually. and it has the traditional big ... morelever on the left to do those quickly for each line. IVORY-color case and keys. A special gimmick: It provided FOUR COLORS in one ribbon cartridge set. The two enclosed spools had red/black on half the spool; blue/green on the other half. With a reversing stop in the middle. A bit cumbersome, how-to is explained in the owners manual. Alas, these special ribbons seem to be unavailable. But not to worry, standard 1/2" spooled ribbons fit and work just fine. The black/red one in it works, but is pretty light, both colors. The case is hard-shell SCM style. With"Sears" on the latch area. The steel piano-hinge, on the other side, has extensive rust. It is intact though and works well. The outside of the case has lots of scrapes and marks. The ORIGINAL paper owners manual is included. I do offer combined shipping for CDs and DVDs. Made by Smith Corona for Sears. The body and keys are light tan. Case dark gray. very NICE LOOKING. The cover over the printing mechanism lifts up for access to the ribbons. For cleaning, and to clear jams. It is full-electric; carriage return and advance. As well as keystroke assist. is an about 1970 model. Finger pressure is very light. Like word processors and computer keyboards. The printing mechanism is essentially the same as mechanical typewriters, but delivers consistent pressure to the paper. Print pressure is adjustable for one to ten copies; those were the days! It takes standard 1/2" ribbons. One or two colors. The one in it is black. Printing is still acceptable. The Q key is powered but the linkage to print it does not operate. It has NOT been taken apart or jiggered with. The other keys all print well. Made in the USA by Sear, Robuck and CO. The left platen knob turns freely so the carriage cannot be forwarded with that knob but the right one works fine. Both of the carriage release buttons. 1960's BEAUTIFUL VINTAGE SEARS TUTOR PORTABLE TYPEWRITER w/ CASE#871-1960 Clean. Excellent cosmetic condition. This model was manufactured by Smith Corona. For Sears. It's an almost exact replica of a portable Smith Corona in body& case. The angular ribbon cover and the deeper blue on the Sears version is the only thing I see that differentiates it from the Corona. The last photo shows the two versions(Smith Corona Corsair Deluxe being the other) stacked. The one on top is the Sears Tutor. I've included a photo using each key. Though colors are faint. As there's no ribbon, it shows that a ll keys work well/evenly. Sold as is! A new ribbon is about $5 on eBay/Amazon. There is a crack(see photo) in the back corner of the case. That's the only flaw. Awesome. Like new, vintage, rare, classy Sears Scholar model 161.53970. Portable e lectric typewriter with hard case. In two tone. Brown and black, with owner's manual and new black and red printing tape. Serial#643782. Everything is clean and in perfect condition, with few scuffs in the back bottom. It looks like it was never really used. Rare condition. I typed with all keys to show how well they work. The imprint is strong and crisp. Please see the pictures. This is a wonderful typewriter. Was tested and works great, with great classy sound. There is a switch for selecting red, black and stencil typing. Attached to the manual is a small and sealed envelope, which appears to contain two replacement springs. This is a rare opportunity to own this vintage and full package in rare and perfect condition.
