So it only comes off a little at a time. The original Leather strap looks to be missing. There are small nicks. Dings, and chipped paint. Up for auction is this vintage F.G.L. Surveying instrument. Transit Surveyor Theodolite. The lens element it seems clear, fungus-free, no scratches, no fungus. For the rest of this instruments condition I have taken plenty of photographs and I would rather you judge it's condition by looking at the photographs below. If I named this instrument incorrectly please rely on the photographs below to figure out what this is as I am a layman and my terminology maybe mistakeful. Upon recieving this item. We realized something inside had come loose or had broken some how. So we opened it up and found that the rattling we were hearing was indeed caused by not one. But a few parts that had come loose. These loose parts do not appear to have been"broken" off. But rather, it appears they have become dislodged from wherever they mounted. The real issue is going to be with a component inside the unit which DID break.This component looks like it served as some type of joining coupler between the upper main body of unit and the rotating base assembly. The material that broke looks like it may be carbide.a super hard. But ... morebrittle metal. You can see the broken component in the last photo. It is the part that once joined these two assemblies and is located in the very center of the two main components shown in photo. We believe this breakage is what caused the smaller components to become dislocated. Needless to say. We are selling this unit As-Is. Should just be a matter of acquiring this replacement part and replacing the bad one. That, and figure out where the loose components belong. Good luck. Overall Dimensions are 5" x 7" x 14 1/2" tall. I picked this up at a house sale because it looked interesting. I know absolutely nothing about surveying instruments so if I make an error or fail to describe or mention something please email and I'll do my best correct it. This is a 19th century theodolite in as found condition. I believe the name on the dial is F. Eckel New York. There are two broken pieces of glass. One covers a scale and the other is the leveling bubble. Check out the photos to see. The compass dial measures 4 3/4 inches and has scratches in the center of the glass. The tube length is 10 1/2 inches. The brass dial is 4 1/2 inches. The height is about 15 1/2 inches. It weighs in at 20 pounds. I don't know if there any missing parts. Email for additional photos. Keuffel & Esser Surveyor's Transit K & E Theodolite Survey contruction Surveyor
Here is a great old Kueffel and Esser surveying transit. I do not know the model number on this K& E Transit. Oneof the yokes on thsi transit has cracked and looks to have been repaired with epoxy of some type. Not the pretiest repair but it seems solid. There is a repair tag attached. Everything appears to be in working order. Optics appear clear. There is some tarnish to the brass. Some dust, some scratches. To me trhe transit looks completely usable as is. Would definitley benefit from a nice cleaning though. Awesome library or office decoration. Great usable vintage piece of surveying history from a reputable company.
