AVO Resistance Range Extension Unit for the Model 8 Universal Avometer
AVO Resistance Range Extension Unit for the Model 8 Universal Avometer Offered for auction is a AVO Model 8 Universal Avometer Resistance Range Unit. This item connects to the lower terminals of the meter and extends the resistance range at the low and high end. The low end range is extended to 0- 25 Ohms. And the high end range is extended to 0- 200 Mega Ohms. The unit requires 1 D size cell for the low range, and 4 of the special Avometer 30V batteries(making 120V) for the high range. As can be seen from the photographs, the unit is nicely made out of wood and paxolin. I would describe this unit as being in a good used condition. There are some scratches and marks on the top panel. Instruction plate and woodwork, and one of the connection strips is slightly bent. Inside everything looks OK, apart from some slight corrosion on the terminals ... morefor the 1.5V battery. I have not tested this unit due to lack of a suitable Avometer, and batteries for the high range, but looking inside there is not much that could go wrong with it. The instrument measures 120mm x 158mm x 8mm and the unpackaged weight is approximately 655g. Postage will be via 2nd class mail(Medium Parcels) in the UK. THE METER IS MADE IN ENGLAND FROM THE 1950'S THE METER IS VERY CLEAN THE NEEDLE MOVES FREELY THE GLASS IS IN GREAT CONDITION THE METER HAS A LEATHER CARRYING STRAP. THE METER SHOWS VERY LITTLE SIGNS OF WEAR FROM AGE OR USE AS IT IS GREAT CONDITION. I WAS GOING TO TRY TO FIX THE METER AS I AM PRETTY SURE FROM IT'S CONDITION THAT IT WOULD WORK WITH THE ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT. Vintage Electronic Avometer AVO Model EA113 The Electronic Avometer(EA113) incorporates an amplifier to increase the sensitivity of the instrument. It could be used on high impedance circuits without affecting either the operation of the circuit or the reading of the meter. The ordinary AVOs could not do this. But we tend to forget these details nowadays when all multimeters have sensitive amplifiers. It has an unusual ohms range, too, which works in the opposite direction to normal analog meters, with zero ohms on the left and infinity on the right. The ohms adjustment control must be set(with the probes apart) to infinity, instead of the usual adjustment to zero with the probes shorted. In addition to that, the red terminal is positive when measuring ohms, whereas on a normal analog meter it would be negative on ohms ranges. In most DC ... moreranges, the meter can be set to centre-zero instead of having zero on the left. In this mode, the knob on the right is used to adjust the pointer to an accurate zero in the middle of the scale. The scale is marked 1-100 in black and 50-0-50 in red, for use in centre-zero mode. This meter also has a wonderfully colourful case, in blue instead of AVO's usual black. Takes four AA batteries. A fine vintage example of a Series 7 Mkii AVOmeter. Battery housing and contacts show no signs of corrosion. The case is sound. But has a broken strap. The leads and probes are included but the leads are the original rubber covered ones and are perished and brittle as one would expect from rubber leads of this age.
