This light source works properly. It uses an odd GE bulb with a filament that heats up and then the mercury vapor ionizes and conducts current. This is almost exactly like the inside of a fluorescent lamp. I believe this is from the 1960s as the bulbs seem to be hard to find. Eye protection should be used as this puts out short wave UV.
