I would definitely replace it before applying power to this unit. Heathkit G-1 Signal Generator The Heathkit G-1 provides RF output from 150 KHz to 34 MHz in 5 ranges. The dial has the third harmonic of the highest band calibrated to 102 MHz. The G-1 was obviously designed with surplus sealed capacitors with two of them prominently mounted on the chassis. The first high voltage filter cap is a 1 mF sealed cap. Tubes are 6SN7 as the oscillator and amplifier and 6X5 as rectifier. The 400 Hz modulation audio is generated by a neon relaxation oscillator fed to the grid of one section of the 6SN7. Heath started advertising surplus electronics in Radio News magazine in August 1947. In the November 1947 issue. Heath advertised its first kit, an oscilloscope made partly with surplus parts. Heath soon followed up with other test equipment kits using inexpensive surplus parts wherever possible. Their first RF signal generator model G-1 first appears in the January 1948 issue. This vintage Heathkit IG-42 RF signal generator serial# 095645 has been refurbished and is in good physical and functional condition. It has a frequency range of 100 KHz through 31 MHz in five bands controlled by a front panel band switch and a frequency control. I replaced the(3) filter capacitors. 7) paper capacitors, and cleaned all switches and potentiometers. All the tubes tested well within specs. I observed a good RF signal across all bands on my oscilloscope. MODEL. FEATURES, CONDITION: Standing just 8 inches tall. The lunchbox sized Heathkit Model SG-8 RF Signal Generator won’t take up valuable bench space. Here’s an unusually well preserved example with a front panel that looks factory fresh. The instrument was recently serviced, and the old obsolete Amphenol output connectors were replaced with BNC type that will be much more compatable with today’s cables and adapters. Components inside are looking fine with no signs of swelling or discoloration, and the generator has been recently tested. Generator will prove to be a valuable instrument to have when aligning radios, etc where you can switch in the on-board modulation circuit or externally modulate a signal on top of the RF signal. RF signal is adjustable from 150 KHz all the way up to 220 MHz in five adjustable steps on the band selector. ... moreSmoothly geared tuning condenser has great stability, and the dial index mark accurately points to the proper frequency calibrations. Photos of the electronics will show that this unit has a neat layout on a copper plated chassis, and interior is quite clean without corrosion. Pots and switches have been properly cleaned and work well, with switches positively engaging, power cord is safe and pliable. The unit has been tested, and the signals are present at all frequencies. The audio test signal is working as well with a very clean sine wave output. Modulation circuit works as well, and it was interesting to have a radio nearby to listen to the beat note and whistling as the IF and RF frequencies were being matched. Cosmetics are superb overall with only a few faint scratches on the gray textured wrinkle finish. Front panel looks factory fresh without a scratch, silkscreened graphics and numerals all legible, green pilot light is bright, and carry handle is safe and sturdy.
