Up for bid is the military version of the Hewlett Packard 8640B RF Signal Generator. option 323 with sealed heavy duty case) I bought this a number of years ago for mainly for checking out scope bandwidth. A few years ago I checked out how close the counter calibration was by comparing via beat to the 10Mhz signal from WWV. And it was as close as it could read out. It has a few minor issues. That didn't matter to me so I never tore into it to fix them: 1. The RF output does not go to zero on the meter in any range. 2. The LED digit in the counter lowest place does not work correctly. 3. The fan is somewhat noisy. arent they all? The main photo shows it outputting 350 Mhz into my Tek 485. Scop e is NOT included! UPDAT E 5/20: I had a question about the modulation. Spe cifically tha t the 8640 was set on modulation. But the scope only show ... mores the carrier signal. The modulation works. I have added two new photos showing: 1. 1 M hz carrier signal. With 1 K hz FM modulation 2. 1 Mhz carrier signal. With 1 Khz AM mo dulation. In ternal pulse modulation works too. If requ ested I can upload a photo. HP / Agilent 8640B Signal Generator and Manual with Phase Noise Verified
Here's a nice HP8640B. I'd bet that this is the only one on ebay that has had it's phase noise measured. Phase noise is an extremely important measurement that is often overlooked. Spectrum analyzer plots only tell part of the story- it is just about impossible to judge phase noise from an ordinary spectrum analyzer plot that you usually see on ebay. It was measured in an Agilent E5500 series phase noise measurement system using the HP8663 Low Noise Signal Generator as the reference. You see that it meets specification easily. You won't find a better signal generator these days. Unless you have an 8663) they just don't make them like they used to. The spectrum plots show maximum output at 30 MHz and 1 GHz. The output attenuator is working fine. This is a great generator for measuring receiver sensitivity or using as a ... moreLO for a low noise downconverter. The manual has one supplement and actually does cover this serial number. Another rarity! This HP8640B has option 2 installed which extend the frequency range to 1.024GHz. Included are the Generator, the manual, and a power cord. Nothing else pictured is included. Due to the age of this instrument, I offer it as-is. Apparently units supplied to the US Military were marked as AN/USM-323(8640B opt 323) and units marked as 8640M were supplied to defense contractors. They are the same unit with the same features, options, etc. This particular unit was acquired from a long-time radio technician. Who has decided to retire and reduce his collection. He claimed that this unit was fully functional when last used about a year ago. I powered the unit on, and everything seemed fine. It was not tested with various inputs. Frequency and range selectors are functioning accurately. It is used and well-serviced in its life. Service sticker shows it was calibrated in 1998 and it was used after that. While it is not pristine, it lived most of its life in a rack for professional use. Rack-mounting marks are apparent but no damage. Top removed only for picture and to show that it is clean, and with all parts and boards intact. Otherwise, unmolested and ready.
