The Bausch& Lomb Optical Company produced this model microscope from ... more1884 to 1896. It is one of the largest microscopes produced by the firm during that late 19th Century time frame second only in size and complexity to their Professional Model(NOTE: Please see the accompanying image comparing the size of the instrument with a standard bottle of wine this microscope is almost 2x as tall! Antique microscope collectors will note that the"Universal" Model is very similar to the"Investigator" model also offered by B&L. However. The Universal model is a much larger instrument with a more elaborate substage assembly, a wider diameter body tube and a double drawtube. This microscope bears the name of the manufacturer on the rear of the brass stage of the instrument. Bausch& Lomb Optical Co(see close-up images) However, the instrument does not bear a typical serial number. For some odd reason, Bausch& Lomb did not engrave serial numbers on their earlier microscopes. Instead, they would place the serial number on the front lip of the floor of the wood case that normally accompanied the microscope. Antique 1903 Bausch + Lomb microscope New York Serial #44651
Up for auction is a Bausch + Lomb antique brass microscope. It has a sticker across the front of it that is marked B. M. Levoy Inc. New York City. It is marked Bausch + Lomb Rochester on the lenses and t is a coin plate on it marked with serial number 4465. This serial number dates from 1903. It appears to be in working order. But will need to be cleaned. Look at my pictures for condition, This microscope would be great as a restoration project, left untouched as is or to be used for parts. Antique Microscope Bausch& Lomb Needs TLC: The microscope is missing an interior lens(see picture 8) and the mirror has a crack in the flat side and a couple of stains in the concave side. Also on the right side there are scratches. The rest of the microscope is fine. The base& platform are good, clips are good, focus wheel turns freely, eyepiece lens' are good, revolving lens holder turns easily, wooden cabinet is good(there is no key) Needs a cleaning. ANTIQUE BAUSCH & LOMB OPTICAL CO. SOLID BRASS MICROSCOPE - Pat. Date 2/16/1897
The item up for sale in this auction is a Bausch& Lomb Optical Company Microscope. There is a patent date of February 2nd. 1897 on the micro focus adjustment wheel. I tested all of the lenses using a piece of paper with writing on it, each lens was able to get a fairly clear picture. The mirror does have some blemishes on it and some appear to be permanent. The frame of the microscope is all brass and is in pretty good shape. There is definitely some wear and tarnish on it but nothing major. I can't find any missing pieces and everything appears to be in really good working condition. The microscope will be shipped out in a wooden case along with a box of about a dozen glass slides. This model microscope was designed and made by Ernst Gundlach during his relatively brief period of employment with Bausch& Lomb from 1876 to 1879. This early Gundlach-type microscope model is quite rare. Being in production for only about two years. As such, it will be of considerable special interest to collectors of Bausch& Lomb antique microscopes, as it is a model that rarely, if ever, is offered for sale in this venue. This instrument bears the name of the manufacturer on the front face of the nickel-plated brass body sleeve. Bausch& Lomb Optical Co. This is a very gently used pair of vintage classic cat-eye style glasses frames from Bausch& Lomb. These are from the SWAN product line and are semi-translucent BROWN in color. The frame measures approximately 4.75” tip to tip and the lens are approximately 1.25” by 1.5” The inside upper right corner of the frame is marked B&L 42[ 20 and the right earpiece is marked SWAN 5 1/2. These feature metal hinges. Molded nose rests, wire-through earpieces, and clear Rx lenses. The lenses can be replaced with Rx or plain, clear or tinted lenses. These were obtained in an estate lot and are in superb very gently used condition. They are clean and sound with no damage or signs of wear. Needs a quick clean and oil to be ready to be put back in service. It does seem to work well and operate smoothly. The automatic advance works and is adjustable. I'm not sure if that is a blade in the holder or a rake that would go behind a blade.It has a very tiny radius on pointy end as seen in the photos. I have never used one of these thats why I'm not sure about the blade. Use it or just display it as a great medical antique.It is very heavy and precisely built. RARE 1936 Bausch Lomb Optical Lithograph Optometrist Advertising Artboard Sign
This rare advertising& promotional piece is for Bauch& Lomb and dates to 1936. It was produced as a lithograph on artist board by Einson and Freeman and is in exceptional condition for it's age. With strong color retention. It is in what appears to be the original frame, which is plain and non-remarkable. It should be noted that it was intended to be framed without glass due to the sturdiness of the art board it printed on, and has bowed slightly over the years. This does remedy easily if re-framed under glass. There are also a few very minor scuffs. The artist was W.F. Soare and his signature is on the print and can be seen in the photograph provided. I am unfamiliar with the artist and have no history on him. This piece depicts Dutch scientist and"Father of Microbiology" Antoni Van Leeuwenhoek. The serial number is 51084 which dates this microscope to 1905. The plaque on the top of the fitted wood box is from Arthur H. Thomas Co. Philadelphia where the microscope was originally purchased!
