Black Americana Polychrome Painted Metal Sculpture of African Slave in Chains
BLACK AMERICANA POLYCHROME STATUE OF AFRICAN SLAVE IN METAL CHAINS This auction is for an antique polychrome metal statue of a large African slave who is wearing an iron device on his back that appears to be chained to him at the neck and waist. He wears striped shorts and has his arms askew. It's hard to look at for me as I think this was a shameful period of American history. But the dignity of the man in these conditions shines through. The statue is mounted to a marble base and is not signed. It stands 14-1/2" tall. The statue appears to be hollow inside, on what appears to be a bronze base which is then mounted to the marble. Other than a few paint scrapes to the face and legs, the piece is in excellent condition. It appears to be quite old but bears no makers marks. The statue has a lot of decorative presence. It is all hand carved and is a statue of a black. Male, slave in chains. The artist captured real feeling in the piece. The man is blowing on a conch sea shell horn. The carving has the original finish. It is not signed. He is in very good condition with normal age related wear. He does have some water spotting mostly on the base, see photos. This was carved sometime between the 1940s to the 1960s. He could use a light cleaning and polishing to taste.
