1960s Vintage LUTZ 4" Forestry Compass with Sights in Leather Case, Japan
Interesting old compass came with some Forestry Department surplus. 4" dial and several scales. Fold up sights with good wire. Basic function is good and it seeks north easily. Small knob on bottom locks needle. Level vial is cracked and dry. Vial assembly unscrews from bottom so you may be able to replace it. Adjustable for declination. Threads for mounting on a staff appear to be 1/2" very fine thread. Leather case has a place to hold mounting adapter but I do NOT have it. Up for your consideration is a vintage SuperLite Fibremetal aluminum logger’s hard hat that has two US Forest Service decals. There are three metal clips along the outside crown of the hat. But I have no idea what their original purpose was. The decals have a few scratches from years of use and the chippy leather headband has definitely seen better days. A few small pea size dents. Base of compass is tapped with very fine threads a little over 1/2" diameter. There is a brass fitting screwed into these threads that has a taper socket for mounting on a Jacobs Staff stick. Here we have a 3 axe lot of single bit pole axe heads. These are vintage and one is an antique I believe. The first axe head is a approx. 3 lb axe that is made by Plumb. It is in very good condtion. The next axe is stamped 3 1/2lb. Thats the only marking on axe. It is also in very good condition. The third axe is a Coast to Coast Woodsman. This is an old axe head. It seems to be around 3lbs. This axe head has some chips in the blade edge and some mushrooming on the hammer end. Still in very useable condition. This is a special tool for measuring trees. Did some internet research. this tool is used by tree"cruisers" guys that preview areas for tree harvesting) and this tool helps them figure the harvest amount per acre. This tool was taken into the shop as trade for silver. and now is available for auction her on Ebay. Checking the internet. I found some for sale. I copied the list below, and have determined this is the"WIDE SCALE" model, which is a bit more expensive. This tool is used, just a bit of rub on the paint,but seems to be in fine shape. When you release the front button, the scale inside swings up and down, until you release the button to"lock" the reading. A few light scratches on the body. But all the mechanical parts are working fine, and all the lenses and eye pieces are in fine shape. Comes in leather ... morecase. Some engraving on the top looks like FS. Forest Service?
