The pivot was apparently rigged with a spring at one time to hold the hook closed or to keep it from swinging(the only one I have seen that way) The spring needs to be removed as it is heavily rusted and perhaps a new pivot bolt inserted as this hook has been around for a very long time. This is a vintage Peavey No. 228 Cant Hook logging tool. The metal is marked"2- 3/8 PEAVEY NO. 228" on one side and"THE PEAVEY MFG. OAKLAND. MAINE" on the other. Stamped B 1 above the hook joint. The condition of the metal is a rusty, but the hook swings freely and all pieces are secure and firm. The hook has an open width of around 17" and closed it is 3.5" Beautiful working rusty condition.
