Titled“ The Fruits of the Christmas Tree. was made in the year 1874. In this scene, we see a group of young children gathered around a young woman seated in front of a Christmas tree. In her lap are a number of small toys which she is in the process of handing out to the children– these are the"fruits of the Christmas Tree" referred to in the poem which appears just below the engraving. Background: The practice of plucking actual fruit from the Christmas tree was a custom of German origin. But during the Victorian era this holiday practice grew in popularity in England as well, apparently due to it being followed by the Royal Family. Over time, toys and other presents were tied to the tree, along ... morewith the fruit, and in many cases supplanting it. These toys became the new“fruit of the Christmas tree. This is a very nice vintage hand hooked rug depicting Santa and his reindeer in a snow covered forest with Christmas Trees. I purchased it at an estate sale so I do not know its exact age. I believe it came from a company that made hooked rugs rather than an individual since there was a label on the back at one time. It is in very nice condition. The colors are bright and beautiful. This listing is for two 10" dinner plates by Woods Ivory Ware. Wood& Sons, England, circa 1930s. These are in a variation of the Indian Tree pattern. These are antique plates, and one is in better condition than the other. One has no cracks or chips. One of them has a hairline crack that is visible on opposite sides of the rim and on both sides. The cracked one is also overall darker in color from use and age. Both have some crazing that is normal for pottery of this type and age.
