1920s Copper Metal Elgin Watch Advertising Letterpress Printing Plate#3 Up for auction is this fantastic antique 1920s printers plate of an antique Elgin Watch. It is copper over what is either aluminum or lead. I'm not sure. It was manufactured by The Art Metal Works, Inc. which was located in Newark, NJ on Mulberry St. They were well known for their metal works. I acquired 11 of these plates which are all listed on separate auctions. When I got them they were in the original box that they had been mailed in. The box was addressed to a W.T. Gress in Ottawa. Ill. The box back is stamped with the Company name and address. It also has(3) 1-1/2 cent Harding US stamps on the box. Harding stamps were issued in 1925. That is how I determined the age of the plates. Metal Printing Plate For 1930 Graf Zeppelin First Day Covers
This unusual item is a metal printing plate. Mounted on a block of wood. Engraved on it are first day covers for the three denominations of 1930 Graf Zeppelin first day covers in three denominations: the 65 cents, $1.30, and $2.60. I'm not entirely sure of its purpose, but my guess is that it was used to print a page in a dealer catalog that advertized these first day covers for sale. An interesting oddity for a serious stamp collector. As you can see from my scan, it has a surface scuff on the top third. Stolow& Co. for Repoeblik Indonesia stamps. The primary purpose of the stamps was propaganda although Indonesian officials say that they also intended to have the stamps issued in Indonesia. The initial series of stamps were inscribed Rep oe blik Indonesia and were delivered from the printers in January 1949. However. A spelling reform had changed the name to Rep u blik Indonesia. And a new series was prepared with the new spelling. Most stamps were printed by the Austrian State Printer in Vienna except the three high values of 5, 10, and 25 R, and the blockade stamps inscribed Repoeblik. These were printed by the E.A. Highly skilled craftsmen cut out and etched ink pads in brass filigree and hammered them into mahogany or rock maple rollers. Often there were four rollers used in tandem to complete a pattern. Each contributing a part of the design and to add a color. Many of these rollers were converted to beautiful lamps about midway through the last century; the hollow center of the roller makes it ideal for this purpose. Offered is this unusual antique metal printing plate for a Ford advertisement. Judging from the picture of the vehicle in the ad I would guess this dates from the 1920s? The plate measures 10" x 4" I am not sure if it is made of lead. Zinc or some other metal– not steel as it is not magnetic. For sale is a very cool reverse(copper? printing plate for newspapers or magazines. I don't know much about these. So correct me if I am wrong in my description. This one measures abount 10" by 10" Being in reverse. It is not easily read, but it does include a pack of Chesterfield cigarrettes, a significant amount of print, the dates"In 1621" and"In 1936" and numerous other pictures, as well as Liggett& Myers Tobacco on the bottom corner. This is neat piece. If you have questions please ask. Also. I notice that there may be a slight curve to this plate, reverse side is a stainless-like metal with numerous markings from being used.
