Rouse 6-Inch Job Stick, Composing Stick
This is a 6-inch(actually. 5-3/4-inches in total length, although typically referred to as a 6-inch stick) composing stick. This is a job stick, manufactured by the Rouse Manufacturing Company of Chicago. The stick has the standard lever under the clamp for adjusting to agate(half-pica) measurements. While the serial numbers on the stick and knee do not match, we have checked the stick for accuracy, and it is as accurate as sticks with matching numbers. This stick has"HHS43" stamped on the front of the body of the stick, and"Huntington East High" scratched on the back of the stick. The stick is in good working order, with some rust, which does not affect the operation of the stick. Antique 12" JOB STICK - H.B. ROUSE & CO. - CHICAGO - Letterpress Composing
This is the ROUSE JOB STICK or COMPOSING STICK made by H.B. Rouse& Co. of Chicago. It is 2 inches wide and 12 inches long. It will measure and hold up to 58 picas of type. I'm not sure of the age on this but I've included a description of it from the B B& S Catalog of 1907. They were made for a long time. The lock mechanism works just fine and all of the metal appears to be straight. It does show some pitting on the nickel plating on several of the surfaces. The pica numbers and marks are all readable. But 57 is a little hard to see. Otherwise, the photos pretty much tell the story. It has been cleaned of rust and feels smooth to the touch everywhere. It comes from a clean. Non-smoking environment. Shipping will be in a flat-rate padded envelope. I can change that to a box upon request but the cost is higher.

Chandler Price Fixed Measure Newspaper Composing Stick The composing stick is a typical 13-pica stick. With an overall length of 5 inches and a depth of 14 picas, which allowed the compositor to set more lines of type before dumping the stick- typical sticks of today have a depth of twelve picas. This type of stick was used extensively during the 19th Century. But phased out fairly quickly when newspapers started using linecasting machines in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. These sticks were extremely common before the invention of the Linotype machine. And were used in newspaper offices across the U.S. to set type in the standard column-width of thirteen or fourteen picas. Manufactured by Chandler Price- Cleveland. With tha length made of wood. It is very old and it has a slight split at the back which you can see in the photo. The reason that there are so few about is that printers usually kept their own stick through their working life and took them when they retired. Please Note: All the letters/numbers/items have been carefully clean to remove the dirt/dust(this includes some ink but not ink stains in the wood) and show the Patina to its best advantage. The 13 1/2" ruler" is a measuring typographic tool. It is in both"Inches" and"6& 12 Pt. Perhaps this means something to you. Probably made in CT. it has loads of information. The telephone numbers are an indication that this piece is old(see pics) It is in fantastic condition. Straight and true. The other 12" measuring devise is marked"H. B. Rouse& Co. Chicago U.S.A. and is numbered"W177" It also is in fantastic condition. It moves and locks into position, easily as designed. These 2 classic typographic tools are a special find for someone! Vintage Antique letterpress printing 16. Mahogany & Brass COMPOSING STICK
I am not a printer. But I do collect wooden tools that are classic. This qualifies, and if you look at the pictures you will have to agree. It has the number 16. on it, is 19 1/8" long 2 1/2" high and 15/16" deep. It evidently was used in the Baltimore area if the Type left in it is any indicator. I have tried to find a comparable but found only one and it was described as turn of the century antique. I will leave this up to the buyers to set the price.
