Estate Copper Etched Printing Plate Block Man Bathing Suit Smoking Tobacco Pipe This antique Copper Etched printing block/plate was just purchased at a local estate sale. The block is made of very old wood and measures just about 4" by 2 3/8" It is just shy of 1" thick. On top of the wood are 2 different layers of metal. The first layer seems to be iron or steel and the top layer is copper. Etched into the top copper layer is a man wearing a bathing suit which seems to be the style of the early 1900's. He is standing on the beach and smoking a pipe. I am assuming this was some type of advertisement. But I am not sure for what. There are some dark spots which may be leftover ink and a couple of scratches upon close inspection. I do not see any major damage or dents to the metal. 1920s Copper Metal Elgin Watch Advertising Letterpress Printing Plate#3 Up for auction is this fantastic antique 1920s printers plate of an antique Elgin Watch. It is copper over what is either aluminum or lead. I'm not sure. It was manufactured by The Art Metal Works, Inc. which was located in Newark, NJ on Mulberry St. They were well known for their metal works. I acquired 11 of these plates which are all listed on separate auctions. When I got them they were in the original box that they had been mailed in. The box was addressed to a W.T. Gress in Ottawa. Ill. The box back is stamped with the Company name and address. It also has(3) 1-1/2 cent Harding US stamps on the box. Harding stamps were issued in 1925. That is how I determined the age of the plates. The estimated date range is from the late 1930's to 1950's. This is a copper printing plate on a wooden block. It displays a group picture of all men with cowboy hats. They look like cowboys and based upon some of our earlist printing plates. This can be quite collectible, with some famous people in it. We do not know however, so view for your self. A copper stamp for making Buster Brown advertising sheets. According to an info sheet that came with these stamps. Outcault made sets of these stamps with generic wording and a cartoon character resembling Buster Brown, From them the store owner was able to print flyers with a their own information. The plate is 4 by 4 inches. Looks to be copper on wood. Includes ... moresample flyer. Condition We try very hard to let you see the condition of our items. All are pictured front and back. Antique copper plate printing block.Whaling ships docked @ New Bedford.
Antique copper plate newspaper printing block etched with a scene of two whaling ships docked in New Bedford. I bought this and many other printing blocks like it at the William J. Rotch house who recently had an estate sale. His 1840's Gothic revival house is also registered in the National Historic site of America. He was known as one of the Whaling Titan of the era and owned several ships including the Ship Maria. The fastest ship of the time. This block was probably used to print reading materials and periodicals of the whaling era in New Bedford and Nantucket. 6 1/4" inches high, 5" inches wide, and 1" inch thick. Hard to capture all the activity in that dockside scene. I see people standing around the dock, either waiting to go on that long voyage or returning home from a long hunt. A great opportunity to make prints ... moreof this bygone American tradition. While googling the Rotch archives. I came upon a picture similar to the one on this printing block and it is a picture of two of the ships of the Rotch Fleet docked at the Rotch Wharf in New Bedford.

This one measures abount 10" by 10" Being in reverse. It is not easily read, but it does include a pack of Chesterfield cigarrettes, a significant amount of print, the dates"In 1621" and"In 1936" and numerous other pictures, as well as Liggett& Myers Tobacco on the bottom corner. F. BRIGDEN CANADIAN ARTIST COPPER PRINTING PLATE COPPER ON WOOD WESTERN SCENE
This auction is for very historical copper on wood printing plates done at the Brigden's Printing Engraving company in Toronto Ontario. Frederick Brigden was an artist and worked for a few different engraving firms before he was the sole owner of Brigden's Engraving Company Ltd. I have two other sets of printing plates listed on ebay. There probably were more plates for this picture. But I only have two. Each plate has been engraved a little different as each copper plate would have been done in a separate color. These plates are no. 5 and both have engraved on the side on one and end on the other.Brigden's Limited Engraver's Toronto. One of the plates would be yellow ink and the other plate would be red ink. The copper has been secured on a piece of 3/4" hardwood for the purpose of the printing press. This plate is signed ... moreon the one plate on the bottom left. It is backwords, so I think this one is F. Brigden that did it, but not totally sure. These plates are not perfect, they have been used a lot. By the size of them, I'm thinking they could have been postcards or greeting cards. They are approx. 6 1/2" by 5" There are some good reading sites on the net about the Brigden printing company. It's interesting to know that Frederick Brigden employed some members of the Group Of Seven, back before they were the Group Of Seven. The scene on these plates looks more like Western Canada, but they are not titled on the back. I also read he did photo engraving, but am not sure if that is what this is. Brigden also did engraving art for the Eatons catalogue's.
