Burmese Lacquer Sa Dauk Document or Letter Tube This is an old piece. I would guess at least 50 years old. Traditional Burmese lacquer technique with layers of red. Green, and black. An absolute charming and playful design with elephants and plants incised through the lacquer layers. There are some old retouches around the rims. There are a few small insecure areas along bottom rim. Easily consolidated. All in all in pretty good condition. Overall length is 14 3/4" or 37.5 cm Diameter is 1 7/8" or 4.7 cm These are really hard to photograph and I have had problems with light. If you have questions. Charles Dickens A wonderful single page autograph letter signed. April 2, 1866, to Henry G. Bohn, along with the hand addressed and signed envelope. Dickens thanks Bohn for a copy of his book of Robert Seymour's Sketches. He references the great controversy about the authorship of the Pickwick Papers. This baseless nonsense of Mr. Seymour's originated with his mother. After(as Hall of Chapman and Hall's told her) she had every appearance of having taken to drinking more than was good for her-or for anybody else except the publicans. Dickens first gained widespread notoriety with the Pickwick Papers. The seeds for the book began two years prior as a series of published drawings by a well known illustrator Robert Seymour accompanied by some humorous prose. Anonymously written by the little known Dickens. The direction of the work ... morequickly shifted as the writing eclipsed the illustrations. The creative struggle between the declining artist and ascending writer was momentarily resolved when Seymour committed suicide. When the serial was published as book. Dickens emerged with his own name and great public acclaim. But the creative dispute was reborn. Seymour's widow and partisans claimed that Dickens was merely taking credit for the ideas. Character development and storyline that Seymour had created and discussed with Dickens prior to his death. Thirty years after Seymour committed suicide Henry Bohn published a book with 86 plates of Seymour's sketches. It is that book which Dickens is acknowledging but not without taking an opportunity to open old wounds and brand Seymour's widow as a drunk. The Seymour mentioned by Dickens would be the illustrator's son. As the artist's own mother died before the Pickwick Papers began. This is a fabulous Dickens piece, no doubt one of the most interesting Dickens letter to come to market in a long time. Probably FELT The handles of both items are covered in small black and white/creme rectangle blocks which feel like ceramic/pottery but could also be bone perhaps. The letter opener and the surround of the magnifying glass is made of a SILVER coloured METAL but I see no stamps or any way of identifying the metal or item maker anywhere The letter opener measures 9.5 inches in length and just under 1 inch wide at it's widest point. It is in LOVELY CONDITION The magnifying glass measures 9.5 inches in length and the diameter of the glass lens is just under 4 inches in diameter. The glass has two surface scratches of significance and a few other small ones. Neither of the scratch types are in the ... morecentre of the glass.
