Bookbinder waste 10 fragments Pre 1540 Manuscript Cranach relation?
In the covers of the confessio fidei exhibit. Printed in wittenberg 1540, I found these 10 fragments. They are mainly written in German. One leaf in Latin, hard for me to decipher. I am not a codicologist(I wish) Perhaps letters. There is mention of a Barbara. I assume this is Saint Barbara. But there was another Barbara in Wittenberg at that time, the wife of Lucaus Cranach, the famous painter. Since I don;t have the time to research all these things. Amazing Brass Bookbinding Clasp Tudor Rose English Bookbinder's 16th C. Style NR
For auction is this really. Really cool bookbinding clasp, top plate. Please note: the book is not included in this auction, it is just pictured to illustrate how the clasp might look in place. The clasp is hand wrought and the back has evidence of hammer marks. The top has a deeply and intricately engraved TUDOR ROSE. I assume this is English and it reminds me of the 16th Century but I imagine it may be much later. It is corroded and has a lovely patina. This little relic would look amazing if used on a period binding and would add value and beauty to your own bookbinding creations. Very Nice Antique Hoole Machine& Engraving Works Bookbinder Hand Press Tool I found this very old Hoole bookbinding hand press tool at an estate sale. It's in amazing condition for it's age. I didn't know what it was until I researched it and found Hoole Machine& Engraving Works were the most prolific bookbinding toolmakers of their day. They were established in 1932 and stayed in business until 1911 in Brooklyn N.Y. This is Hoole hand stamp No.1407. I found this information out on a website of the Davistown Museum. They have a chart showing the different hand stamps that Hoole made. I believe the metal is bronze as it's non-ferrous and doesn't attract to a magnet. I bought a pair of bookbinder's rolls for leather work about 30 years ago. The rolls are in separate auctions. I have used them on maybe 4 projects over the years. They are in good condition and have no dings that would detract from use. They make attractive borders blind and with gold leaf. This roll is geometric. The other is a border of garlanded trident leaves. Please look carefully at the photos before bidding. They are marked made on Brooklyn. Sometime I would guess around 1920. They are solidly set into 16 inch wooden handles. I have photographed them on a grid of 1 inch squares for a size reference. If you should win both auctions I will ship both rolls in one box.

Pictured is a vintage tool integrated with a sculpted handle in osage orange with hand hammered languets( straps) and riveted through and through. Wedged with tiger maple. The tool is a shoe maker or bookbinder hammer from the guilded age, sporting a heraldic lion in statant pose( all four feet on the ground) This tool is hafted with wood split from the log, air dried and sculpted with wedge and edge. Never sanded, you can see into the wood down to the cellular level. I lavished time on this hammer because its' special. Antique bookbinder book press-I don't know for a fact that this item is a book press-that's what I was told by a person I consider to be very knowledgeable-however. I'll leave it up to you to decide. In any case. It is a neat piece! It is made of oak with a very nice graceful metal curved piece. Looks like it was meant to be hung on a wall?see the large screw hole in the curved oak piece. The section that the screw handle goes in is a seperate piece that is screwed in. Size is about 7 inches wide by 13 inches top of oak piece to bottom curver iron piece. This postcard is unused. Bookbinder's history can be traced to the oyster saloon opened in 1893 on Fifth Street near South Street by Dutch immigrant Samuel Bookbinder. In 1898. Bookbinder moved it to Second and Walnut Streets to be closer to the docks. The restaurant left the family in the 1930s when it was bequeathed to the Jewish Federated Charities. John Taxin bought it with partners Hyman B. Sichel and Jimmy Retana in 1945, according to city records. A few years later, after buying out the partners, Taxin added"Old Original" to differentiate it from Bookbinders Seafood House, which two of Samuel Bookbinder's grandsons opened in 1935.
