Antique Photo Print Block - 1920's/30's - Flapper Era Cutie Kicks Up Her Heel
OVERVIEW: Many years ago I bought a collection of print blocks which had been owned and used by ca. 1920's/early 1930's"muscle magazines" Two magazines in which some of my blocks apparently were used were“The Arena” and“The Arena And Strength” Each is a wooden block with a copper plate attached via tiny nails/brads. Bearing a photographic image of a bodybuilder and/or athlete or of a piece of sports equipment. This auction is for one of those print blocks, described hereinbelow. I'm not sure of the correct name for the printing technique in which these blocks were used. I've seen it referred to as"letterpress" but I'm not sure. Perhaps you know. I find these little guys' and gals’ images to be quite striking. The wood blocks appear to be very hard/dense. I've been told that they may be maple, ... morebut I'm not sure. Never thought I’d get to use that word on eBay… Fairly light image. But details show nicely: See photos accompanying this listing, please. Block measures approx. 3.8" wide and approx. 5.1" tall. Block thickness is approximately.85" NOTES: The metal face of this print block is. Very basically, a photographic negative. I have lightly cleaned& polished the copper using a very soft cloth and Wenol polish. To bring out the image, with my index finger I have very gently rubbed a very, very fine powder onto it. Minton Hollins & Co. Gothic Block Print Wolves Victorian Antique Rare
This tile is 6" x 6" in size with an nteresting Gothic block printed design. The animals are probably wolves or some othe mythical creature. The foliage is richly elegant. Excellent block print with sharp edges and just the right amount of ink. There are some ink smears on the right but these are not serious and reflect the hand craftmanship of the process. Produced about 1880 before transfer printing became the preferred printing process. This could be a splendid addition to a collection because the design is strong. Moody, and rare.

Antique ORIGINAL Ukiyo-e JAPANESE WOOD BLOCK PRINT Hiroshige 1851-1853 Ukiyo-e(floating world” is a genre of Japanese woodblock prints and paintings produced between the 17th and the 20th centuries. It is the main artistic genre of woodblock printing in Japan. It is from the Edo period. Which comprises ukiyo-e from its origins in the 1620s until about 1867. This very old antique Japanese Wood Black Print is done on Rice Paper. It is an original as you can see by the viewing the back of the print where the colors have bled through. The photos really tell the story. The fibers of the paper are also very visible lending credibility to its originality. On the front lower right corner(see photo) T he two circular seals on the top right are an indication of the dates. The bottom squarish seal is the publisher's mark. Yamadaya Shōjirō, active ... morein Edo(present day Tokyo) between the years 1851–1866, so the piece was definitely published between those dates. And to the best of my knowledge, the date of this piece is between the years 1851–1853. The downward strokes are the name of the piece which is translated as“Painting of a Port Scene” I was unable to determine the name of the artist. However the Ronin Gallery in New York believes it to be one sheet of a triptych by Hiroshige. There is also the number“13” within a circle printed on the back(see photo) The actual print measures approx. 14 x 10 inches. It has been taped to a mat that measures approx. 18-1/4” x 12-1/4” The piece is in overall very good condition for its age. There are 3-4 small holes on the left edge that are concealed by the mat. There are also small holes at the upper left corner. A tiny water spot appears above the trees about 2” from the right edge. Will do my best to answer any questions you may have. Hiroshige Japanese Wood Block Vintage to Antique This listing is for this vintage and older woodblock print. It is a Japanese piece and looks like the work of Hiroshige. It is a smaller piece with an image size of approximately 3 1/2 by 5 inches. This has always been framed since I owned it. Overall frame size is approximately 7 inches by 9 inches. This has beautiful rich and dark colors. It is of a moonlighted harbor scene. There are boats. Seagulls, a bridge and small village depicted. This is in very good condition. I never saw it at first until I went to photograph but there is one small bit of something on the inside of the glass. I have shown this in the last photo. It hardly detracts when displayed unless you look closely but someone will have to take it apart to remove it. Template made of solid lead(1/8" thick) and securely mounted to a solid wood block(dense variety, exact type unknown) Excellent used condition with NO major defects whatsoever. Superb, rich layer of very nice patina. Features a man/boy licking an evelope that bears the text"YOU'RE INVITED" Being offered for sale AS-FOUND. Uncleaned.
