Printing Block, Print Block, Printing Plate This one is from a group of very early automotive print blocks from the very early 1900's all with photos of automobiles from the very early 1900's. These were made with a Photomechanical Technique developed in the 1880's Printing of Halftone Images Originally. During the era of letterpress halftone printing and before its replacement by offset printing. A halftone negative was copied ... moreonto a metal plate(copper, zinc, special metal alloy) covered by a photosensitive coating. The unexposed parts under the halftone negative were soluble and could be removed from the surface. Leaving those plate areas exposed and susceptible to chemical etching using acids(for zinc) or iron(III) chloride solutions(for copper) This is a very simplified description of the process. The actual etching procedure is more complex and is composed of several steps. The first was designed to increase the resistance of the light-hardened photosensitive coating against etching. Multiple-step etching then provided more controlled etching. And steps were taken to protect the walls of the trench against etching under the resist-protected surface. Called undercutting. The fully etched and rinsed metal plate was stripped of all of its resist coating. And the plate was then ready for printing using a so-called letterpress. Letterpress(plane-plane) printing was very slow and was used only for low-volume printing. Pair vintage Wood Block Print Makers for Wallpaper? Fabric? Brackets for hanging
E. This pair of wood block print makers are quite heavy. I obviously don't know what they are called. But I think they were used to print on wallpaper. Each piece has a different pattern. I don't know how old they are, but I'm sure they are very old. They have hangers nailed on the back so you can hang them on your wall. They are approximately 6 X 4 1/2 inches and 5 X 7 inches. I am Sock Monkey's Granny. He's helping me get ready to downsize from a house where I've lived for more than 40 years to a 2 bedroom condo. Unique Nine Block appliqued quilt. In a rare, vintage Hawaiian Pattern/Style. This is a finished quilt, likely dating to the 1940's or earlier. Hand quilted, with machine top stitching on the applique. The blocks are 16" square; the entire quilt is 75" x 75" The back is solid white. We believe the fabric to be cotton. The quilt needs cleaning. It shows wear, discoloration along fold marks, spots and soiled areas, and heavy wearing away in parts of the piece work. It's been well loved. No odors! Japanese woodblock print vintage Suzuki Harunobu print painting oriental block
Here is a vintage Japanese woodblock print on very nice paper. Roughly 12" x 9" give or take) and this was taped to the back of the matting. There is a crease by the lady's shoes, so it has a little damage, but it might iron out. I was afraid to do anything to fix this, because I don't know what I am doing, and I don't want to make it worse. It is attached( glued lightly on the left edge) to a heavier paper, with a mat around it, but that part is dirty, and no good. The print is excellent, clean and crisp, except for the crease! There is probably no way this is from the 1700's, like the explanation suggests, but it is very nice quality, you can tell. Check back from time to time as I will be listing loads of old alpha numeric print stock of all sizes and styles as well as stock of company logos.
