I am pleased to offer up for your consideration a wonderful example of a lost art. That of letterpress printing that began in the 15th century and was used well into the 20th century. Here we have a 43 piece lot of wood block type consisting of the complete alphabet plus the numbers, 1-9 and some punctuation. I have arranged them in a nice collage for you viewing pleasure. They are not glued so that you may arrange them to your liking. I love the primitive eye appeal from the lost industrial age. Auction Ends On SUNDAY August 18th at 8:00PM Pacific Time. Mark your calendar! Offered is a great looking and unusual vintage Copper and Metal On Wood Printers Block by WEYERHAEUSER of Tacoma. Washington. Circa 1950's or earlier. Probably used in newspaper and magazine ads. The block advertises a Weyerhaeuser flooring product called Versabroad. The image is fantastic- a Mid-Century housewife wearing a dress and heels sitting on a contractor's back. He's on all fours and she looks in charge. Either the Versabraod or her original flooring is beneath them. The type says"If you'd like to know how 1/4" Weyerhaeuser Versabrod keeps call-backs off your back, mail this coupon" There's a lot more copy type under that. It looks really nice and can be hung if a hook is put on back. Measures 10" x 7" x 1" ... morethick. It's heavy. Weighs 4.5 lbs and the shipping cost reflects that. Condition is overall very good. Some normal light scratches on the copper and wear spots. The back panel pieces are a little loose. They're not broken just loose. Displays beautifully! This auction is for a complete font of 8 line(1-1/3 inch tall) Antique vintage wood type for letterpress printing. Upper case& numbers. Capital"A" letters have Wm H Page& Co. stamped on them. This is a Serif face, with big squarish serifs. Font consists of a complete alphabet, lots of punctuation, ampersand, dollar sign, and numbers. 94 total wooden type pieces included. Please see 7 pictures above for details and specific character counts. I tried to count the total correctly. Wild West" or"Wanted" poster big serifs. Caps, numbers, $! some other punctuation; some press damage to"C" D" E" This type is beautiful. With dark wood colors, and a great wabi-sabi patina from use. Some have lovely, colorful wood grain. Another find of rare civil war era letter press type. Also a great size at 2 1/2 inches. Marked Wm. H. Page& Co. Greenville CT. This mark was used by Wm Page from 1859 to 1870. 45 pieces are offered and includes capital letters. Missing B. G, M, N, X. I placed a W in the M spot! Please check photos for condition. There is a crack in one H. Several letters are kerned with no damage to type face. A few letters with excessive ink on but not on type face. I attempted to identify the exact font by reviewing an 1878 Wm Page catalog; closest match was on page 17- an Aetna Extra Condensed font; only k, i, s were available for match of font. This type appears to be less condensed the sample. An awesome find and chance to own a piece of American printing history.
