The two blocks represent a color separation of a 48 Star. United States American Flag. Would be a great introductory example for a print graphic arts class for teaching. How color separations were created back in the Letterpress printing days. Both blocks are identically the same size. Approximately 3 Inches Wide by 3 ¾ Inches in length by ¾ Inch in depth. The left block pictured above would print the red stripes of the Flag and the block pictured to the left. Would be used to print the blue around the stars. Of course. Very rare tiny wooden letterpress printing blocks in box These wooden characters are extremly rare and nowadays more than hard to find. The box came from France and should date from around 1920/1930. The lid is broken in two pieces. But the characters are in good condition. An exceptionnel opportunity for a collector to acquire an outstanding and very rare set of wooden characters. As wooden characters in this height were very unusual. In this height the characters nearly all have been made out of lead. We have counted more than 450 pieces. We hope, that we did not make any mistake on counting, but you will see, what you get on the close-up photos below. Each character measures only 11 mm: 0.43 inch. The box measures about 40x21 cm- 15.75x8.27 inch. We have removed some dust. But did no full cleaning. However, as you can see on the photos, ... morethe printing blocks are in good condition. The characters were stored up to now in drawers, this is a gorgeous and exceptionnel set of characters. 0-9 numbers in antique characters We have found these vintage characters in a french letterpress shop. Which started in 1910. We think. That these letters should be from around 1930/1940. They have a nice patina and also traces of wear. The letters can be used for exemple as decoration. But also for printing, they are loose and not joined in any way. Which would be a great addition to any wood block type collection. This is a collection of Antique Tuscan wood block type with all capital letters. Featuring classic, concave curved and pointed serifs. Also, you will find a dash, ampersand and exclamation mark among this collection with similar features. There are no numbers included with this block type offer. All are displayed in the photo. The unique type includes a Q that is a descender even though the type are all Capital Letters. Plus, an X& Y with a unique internal curvature in the shape of a heart. See Photo) This type comes from my Grandfather’s old commercial printing shop that was ... moreclosed in the early 1970’s after his death and the beginning of the revolutionary offset printing process. My Grandfather started working in the printing business in the early 1900’s for an existing commercial printing business/newspaper. He eventually purchased years later. This is a used collection of block type. No manufacturer markings have been found on the blocks. May be worn off after years of use. The wood blocks have not been cleaned since they were taken from the printing shop. Some type may still have ink residue on them and a little print shop sawdust… left them alone to preserve their historic and print shop feel. This is a well used collection of type, some letters used more than others, they have scrapes, cuts and imperfections… please observe the photos for more details. Another unique feature is on one of the blocks you can tell they started to carve a letter. Made an error, then, created the letter on the opposite side of the block. All blocks with the exception of the letter“Q” are each approximately 1 5/8 Inches tall. The letter“Q” which is a descender is approximately 2 1/16 Inches tall. See photo) The widths of the blocks vary according to the letter.

The upper case letter"K" 14 line, block is approximately 2 5/16" tall and 1/2" wide. Note: there is a hand carved N on the back of this block. Manufacturer: Unknown Type is all wood. We have washed with mild soap and water to remove the worst of the dust/soil. Our lighting may distort the color of the wood. There is dried ink etc. on some letters.
