John Rodgers(July 11. 1772- August 1, 1838) was a senior naval officer in the United States Navy who served under six Presidents for nearly four decades during its formative years in the 1790s through the late 1830s, committing the greater bulk of his adult life to his country. His service took him through many operations in the Quasi-War with France. The First Barbary War and the Second Barbary War in North Africa and the War of 1812 with Britain. I was originally thinking the hole was for an ink bottle, and possibly was a letter writing box. In any case. It a gorgeous rich brown oak box with an awesome Decoration around the top. Possibly Art& Crafts Era. As mentioned there is an insert. Also has a keyhole, but no key. The bottom is covered with a rust felt and it has 4 brass feet. Exquisite Lalique Hirondelle Bird Sculpture Figurine Old Block Letter Signature
This is a superb vintage art glass sculpture figurine of a swallow signed in block letters LALIQUE FRANCE. It is quite large and weighty measuring approx 6 1/4" high. 4 1/4" at the widest point. The detail is fabulous and it makes a wonderful display item. I believe it is called Hirondelle. I would say it is in excellent vintage condition- on close inspection there are 2 miniscule fleabites and some light scratches to the base and an air bubble inside the glass at the tip of the wing- impossible for me to photograph and do not detract from this beautiful item.

WWI British Letter, France, March 1916. Became an Officer, Killed in Action 1918
This is a scarce. Very interesting, and highly emotional original First World War British soldier's letter, written in France in March 1916 by an infantryman who was killed in action in 1918. This 4 page letter was written in in France by a soldier in the 7th Battalion, Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry, 20th Light Division. The soldier who wrote this letter served on the Western Front from 1915 to 1918. He was killed in action in March of 1918. He was commissioned as an officer in 1917. The letter was written by 14828 Corporal Charles F. Peters of B Company. 7th Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry, who was killed in 1918 while serving as a Lieutenant in the 6th Battalion of the East Kent Regiment(The Buffs) There is outstanding content in this 4 page letter. Which Corporal Charles F. Peters wrote to his sweetheart in London. Peters ... morewas suffering from trench foot, caused by standing in deep cold water in the trenches. WWII Letter. 83rd Infantry Division, 1945. Content about German People & Hitler.
This is a very interesting and emotional original WWII letter. Written on the front lines in Germany on the 25th of February 1945, by an American combat soldier serving in the 308th Engineer Combat Battalion of the 83rd Infantry Division. There is excellent content in this 3 page letter. This soldier felt sorry for the German people when they returned to their homes to find them destroyed. But on the other hand he felt that they deserved it as due punishment for supporting Hitler. He explains that fraternization with Germans was forbidden and that the punishment for infractions could be quite severe: I sure feel sorry for these German people when they come back to their homes and find it isn't nothing but a pile of brick and dirt. But honey it is good enough for them. They had ought not to have gone crazy over Hitler, the son of a bitch. ... moreWe don't even talk to the people. If a soldier is taught talking to a girl he is fined $65. And if he has intercourse with one he gets five years in prison. We show them that we mean business. We will make them wish that they had never started a war and keep me from the one I love for so long. There is additional emotional and interesting content in this 3 page letter. The 83rd Division had just moved into Germany( from Belgium) This man longed for the war to soon end: I guess you can tell we have moved again. Boy. I sure will be glad when this old war is over with. Well. Mail didn't come tonight so I guess I will have to go another day without hearing from you. It is so cloudy and the wind is blowing so cold. It makes me feel so lonely and blue. But honey I will be home one of these days, and honey I will be the happiest little man you ever saw. The letter was written by P.F.C. A low level B-24 bombing raid over Axis power oil refineries in Ploesti, Romania. After Norman's 36th mission. He requested reassignment to the 98th Bomb Group now operating from a captured airfield in Lecce, Italy. Norman's request was approved and he flew an additional 39 bombing raids with his original unit. For his heroism in combat. Norman was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, Distinguished Flying Cross, and eleven Air Medals. Major Norman Whalen was honorably discharged from the Army Air Corps in 1946. Norman entered seminary in Baltimore. Maryland where, in 1954, he was ordained as a priest in the Roman Catholic Church. Father Whalen faithfully served the Catholic Church in the Arizona towns of Tucson, Tombstone, Patagonia and Benson. While working as a historian for the Diocese of Tucson in 1960. Here is a very interesting letter/notice/Rules dated 1918. It measures about 8" X 13" and is in poor to fair condition with fold marks and moderate wear. It is written by a Major T.H. Kruttschnitt. Q.M.O.U.S.A. Division of Quartermaster. It appears to be an"extract.quoted for the information and guidance of all drivers of Motor Vehicles in this Division" It was found in the attic of my friends mother who was 93 y.o. Robberies, etc. Numerous advertisements covering everything from books to Havana cigars Poem: Ode for the Fourth of July 1812 This large newspaper ... moreis approximately 20" tall x 14 1/2" wide in its folded state and comprises one large sheet folded in half and then again in fourths. As to be expected with any fragile paper item of this vintage. There are small nicks and tears along the margins and occasional paper tears along the folded seam. There is also light foxing throughout(see scanned photos) Despite some wear. The fold line is still intact and the paper can be easily read and opened. The quality of paper used in 1812 is obviously vastly superior to paper used in today's newspapers. All text is fully legible with a crisp quality. It is hard to imagine that many of these newspapers have survived intact in the course of 200+ years.
