IXL Oyster Copper Knife Printing Block from a 1945 Wosostenholm Knife Catalog
YOU CAN TRUST US. We have been selling on ebay since before the turn of the century Perhaps the most famous name in cutlery is George Wostenholm. His knife manufacturing company reputably was formed in 1785. But it took three generations for the knife maker to make a mark in Sheffield England's illustrious cutlery history. Amusingly, the original maker's name was"Woistenholme" but the letters"i" and" e" were dropped because this"real" name would not fit on the blades of the smaller knives that the company made. In 1831, the famous I*X*L trademark was assigned to Wosostenholm. There are two claims made about Wostenholm knives and the relationship with one of America’s most famous sons, legendary frontiersman Colonel James Bowie. Neither can be proven, but are accepted my most admirers. The first ... moreclaim is that Bowie ordered knives for himself and his close friends directly from Wostenholm. The second, more famous claim is that, on March 6th 1836 when Bowie died at The Alamo while General Santa Anna's Mexican Army attacked, a knife found on his body was one made by Wostenholms. Since no factory records exist, neither of these claims can be proven. This copper plate was used in the printing of a vintage Wostenholm knife catalog and shows a knive which appeared in the catalog. The engraving which appears at the base of the largest blade of the kinfe is"IXL George Wostenholm" This block is about 5-11/16 inches long. The copper plate which printed the image is attached to a wood block which is 0.790 inches thick. 1.736 inches wide and 5.817 inches long. There is a paper sheet on the back of the block. The United States One Dollar bill is shown for size comparison. For printing. The engraved image is, of course, reversed, but I show the mirror image of the lettering on the plate so the script will be readable for those(like me) who may have a problem reading in reverse. This Unique wood and copper inlaid stamp of the Goddess personification of Roman Britannia. In the 2nd century. Roman Britannia came to be personified as a goddess, armed with a trident and shield and wearing a. This design wooden block is 10 1/2" high. 6" across and 2 1/8" deep. What makes this block even more special is that it is round(hardly seen among this collection) ... moreThe block is a heavy and dark exotic wood with a copper depiction of this antique piece of farm equipment. This was part of the"Iron Age" line of equipment made by Bateman Manufacturing Company in Grenloch. New Jersey. It is quite detailed. This is one-of-a-kind piece and is highly collectible! Condition: Very good(keep in mind that these blocks were often comprised of two or more or pieces of boxwood joined by the nailed copper plate. This item is made up of one block. The copper is not grainy as it appear to be in the photo. Specifications: 1 5/8ths inches square. Just under 1 inch thick. In 1836 the Bateman Manufacturing Company started doing business in Grenloch. New Jersey. They manufactured farm and garden machinery and implements and had many innovations and inventions(including the potato planter shown above) Toward the late 1800s they started marketing these products under the name of“Iron Age. Antique Copper Printing Plate on Wood Block Geese Duck Bird for Lithographs This is an Antique Copper Printing Plate that is mounted on a Wood Block with Nails. Measures aprox 7" tall. 5" wide and 1" depth, it is heavy and weighs aprox a little over 2 1/2 lbs. It has embossed numbers on the wood on the side of D 23 and P 270 and PPPP down the side and there is a metal plate on the corner that has the numbers 5465. In Good vintage condition with scratches and scuffs all around. The wood has cracks and chips, it is old and has age to it. I Love to go to Auctions. Estate Sales and Garage Sales. I find Oddities, Unique and Collectible items. I do this to find use for these Vintage, Old, used items and to make someone Happy and bring back fond memories of long ago.
