Antique Steel or Iron Reciprocal Roller, Roll, Printing Matrix, Equipment, LOOK!
This antique Roller measures 8 1/2" Long X 4" Wide and is well worn. This was the reciprocal roller used opposite the printing roller block. Paper or cloth was pinched or pressed between this roller and another cylindrical reversed text printing block. Roller is made of iron and pressed paper and weighs 6 lbs. You can see some print and graphics pressed onto the outside paper surface. From what I could make out. Print reads, Schrafft's, Novelyn, Alhambra Theatre, Milwaukee, Best Time at Popular Prices" along with an insignia of a buck. Nice old antique. Buyer pays shipping. The block is boxwood with a copper depiction of a this antique piece farm equipment. This was used for printing advertisements ... morefor Bateman Manufacturing Incs. line of equipment marketed under the name"Iron Age" which appears on the plow. This is one-of-a-kind piece and is highly collectible! Condition: Very good Measurements: 2.25 inches tall by 4 inches wide. Just under 1 inch thick. In 1836 the Bateman Manufacturing Company started doing business in Grenloch. New Jersey. They manufactured farm and garden machinery and implements and had many innovations and inventions(including the potato digger) Toward the late 1800s they started marketing these products under the name of“Iron Age. They sold their products all over the world and marketed them through catalogues, trade journals. And other printed matter ads. To illustrate their products they relied on printing blocks which followed the same progression throughout the decades as the printing innovations– starting with hand carved boxwood blocks to stereotypes(making a mold of the engraved block in plaster and pouring in molten metal[similar to type metal] to make a cast. Seems to be working machine, old, dings used little bit of rusty spots and paint and ink stains but functional machine. for use with antique letter type, type not included, table top model for small/retail type showcards showcard machine company 320 w ohio st. Chicago, illinois- your museum of printing history needs this one, the kids could make small sample old timey showcards with this and some letter type. Originally developed as"galley" proof presses to let a compositor take a quick check of his hand-set type. These small, lightweight units usually consist of a flat bed and a simple, single roller on a track above it. The galley of type was set on the bed, inked by hand with a small roller(a"brayer" a sheet of paper laid on top, and the roller pulled across to get an impression.
