We have newspapers for that. But this does it with precision. This unit is a lot more complex than other surface roughness testers I've used, so I really don't know what parameters to set. I got some error messages as a result, but after playing around with it a while, I got it to take readings consistently. It's very sensitive to stylus height and deflection. The printout capability is a nice feature. The set comes with a stand if you want it. It's not a Mitutoyo; it appears to be a modified Sheffield Shadowgraph. But it's heavy and solid, two reasons why you may want it, or maybe not.
