This is a beautiful antique machinist Starrett 12inch level no.98 with ground glass graduated vials. This level has a total of 3 glass bubbled vials. One on the end, one in the middle, and the large one on the top, all three are in beautiful intact condition. The large vial on top has a slide over safety cover which is marked The LS Starrett Co Altho Mass USA. The condition of this antique level is very nice and clean with great a shiny nickel finnish, very little black wear, and a previous name scratched in the side. I believe this name can be touched up rather easily. This level retains the original dovetailed wood case with paper label. Providing a reliable seat for placing on round work. There are 3 vials. One cross-type on the end. To avoid a cant error while checking level. There is a 3rd vial(cross-type) located under the main vial for use when the level is used vertically, rather than horizontally. Here is a Starrett No. 98-12" percision machinist level with original wooden box. This level has been used but still has plenty of life left in it and has no initials or engravings on it or the box. The three glass vials are intact and the movable vial protector move easily. The black finish has some chips and is not perfect and the bottom has some minor scratches and staining but nothing that would affect its accuracy. it may need to be adjusted) The original wooden box has seen better days but works as designed. 12” Master Precision Machinist Level. V-grooved, original box, 0.0005”10” There is no brand name on the level or on the box. I’ve seen three levels like this one online. And all of those were marked“VIS, Made in Poland” The level is in good condition. But there is some light surface rust. I have not tried to clean it. Starrett Company in Athol. Mass. This level is in fine working order and all three vials are in proper order. Starrett offered these levels in two types. The No. 97 with plain vial and the more expensive No. 98 with ground and graduated main vial. This does feature the ground& graduated ... moremain vial. Which is quite sensitive to the slightest movement. The bubble remains correct in size and centers on the two longer graduations. The main vial is accurately adjusted right now, but does provide a very simple and reliable method for quick and easy adjustment, if ever needed. A rotating cover protects the main vial when not in use. This level also provides two smaller vials. One for cross testing and one plumb. Both appear to be quite accurate in their seating. The plumb vial was only offered on the two largest sizes. The black japan finish is very nearly pristine with little if any scuffing and retains it's original glossy shine.
